This book is a part of the Journey Between Two Worlds series, which documents the lives of refugee families. Though the content is dated--- Sudan has changed drastically since the book's year of publication, 1997--- it's themes and trials and tribulations experienced by refugees remain as poignant as ever. Documented here are the lives of one Sudanese who have fled their country's civil war and relocated in the U.S. I can imagine young American learners being intrigued by seeing their country through the eyes of these refugees. Escalators, computers, and modern convenience stores are all new to them. The book does well in contrasting the host country with Sudan, highlighting both geography and history along the way.

We follow the journey of the Dei family as they move from camp to camp before finally finding their permanent home in Atlanta, Georgia. We learn of their fears, and their triumphs, and of how they eventually came to call this country home.
