While waiting for the bus, a man tells Baxter the pig about the joys of Shabbat dinner. But before Baxter can find out how he, too, can join in the fun, the man has boarded the bus. Soon after, Baxter learns that he certainly cannot be a part of Shabbat dinner because he's not Kosher. He then goes forward on his quest to become kosher. This story is a great way to help children understand the misunderstandings of the Jewish community and their traditions. Baxter desperately wants to experience Shabbat dinner, but is devastated when he learns that , according to Jewish law, pork is a forbidden food. He stuff s his face with kosher pickels and raisin challah, hoping to become kosher and even tries to become a cow. When a kind rabbi sets him straight, inviting him to spend Shabbat with her, Baxter realizes that it is much better to be a guest than an item on the menu. I love this book! For me it highlights one of the very special qualities of a Shabbat dinner - that all are welcome to share in the meal and an evening of friendship and community. Some people maybe offended by the presence of a female Rabbi. (Fiona)
