Fiction. Mystery. Humor (Fiction.) HTML:Discover where it all began??#1 New York Times bestselling author Janet Evanovich's first "snappily written, fast-paced, and witty" (USA TODAY) novel in the beloved Stephanie Plum series featuring a feisty and funny heroine who "comes roaring in like a blast of very fresh air" (The Washington Post).
Meet Stephanie Plum, a bounty hunter with attitude. In Stephanie's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in Jersey.

She's a product of the "burg," a blue-collar pocket of Trenton where houses are attached and narrow, cars are American, windows are clean, and (God forbid you should be late) dinner is served at six.

Out of work and out of money, Stephanie blackmails her bail-bondsman cousin Vinnie into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but she figures her new pal, el-primo bounty hunter Ranger, can teach her what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail Joe Morelli, a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one. Morelli's the inamorato who charmed Stephanie out of her virginity at age sixteen. There's still powerful chemistry between them, so the chase should be interesting...and could also be extremely dangero

First Grave on the Right de Darynda Jones (SunnySD)
  2. 20
The Spellman Files de Lisa Lutz (KingRat, Candice_oxo)
KingRat: Lisa Lutz' Spellman files has many of the same kind of "zany" characters and plot elements, but with a harder edge.
  3. 20
Agnes and the Hitman de Jennifer Crusie (Aula)
Aula: The same kind of quick, witty banter between the hero and heroine; same light reading; similiar mystery storyline; good secondary characters that add to the love interest rather than detract.
  4. 10
Body Movers de Stephanie Bond (sjmccreary)
sjmccreary: Both these series feature slightly ditzy fashion-focused women trying to solve mysteries that are really beyond their abilities. Funny, with wacky cast of characters.
  5. 10
Whiskey Sour de J.A. Konrath (Scottneumann)
  6. 21
Retribution Falls de Chris Wooding (JessiAdams)
JessiAdams: Ok, so the genre isn't really the same, but I feel like people who enjoy Evanovich's characters and their interaction with each other will enjoy those same qualities in Wooding's series. Both are very funny books about a set of characters who are trying to achieve things that are really beyond them.… (mais)

I liked this book, the first of the series, though I don't plan to read more. That's partly because I was a huge fan of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone mysteries in the 1980s, and the character seems very similar. The plucky, self-doubting, attractive, young, strong female detective (yes I know, Stephanie Plum is a bounty hunter, but the modus operandi is the same) is no longer a type I'm that interested in. But the book was well-written, amusing in many places (I laughed out loud when the guy she's hunting throws her car keys in the dumpster), and since it's 1992 the attack on her was horrid without being politicized or sensitive to reader trauma. A good book. ( )

I thought I had read this book before but I did not remember it. I love Stephanie Plum. I have read a few of the books that stand-alone.

We are introduced to Stephanie Plum. She needs a job and decided to work for her cousin Vinnie, as a bounty hunter. I love meeting Ranger and Morelli.

Stephanie decides to take on the Morelli case since that has the largest payout. This book was entertaining and the fact that it takes place in nearby New Jersey is nice. ( )

2.5* maybe. To be exact, it’s a bunch of unlikeable characters in a 1.5* story, but mechanically it’s well written (4*).

Reading this in 2024 and realizing it was published 30 years ago, I can that see part of the problem is so much of the story and dialogue aged like milk. But beyond that, it’s trying to be funny and cute while also being a quasi-crime fighter situation, and then there’s some in-your-face assault and beyond violent predatory behavior, and general misogyny… it’s a lot, and I imagine it was considered scandalous in its native 1994.

This was recommended to me by a friend who loves this series, so I felt obligated to see it through, otherwise it would be a DNF for me. I just don’t see much that’s redemptive about this book. ( )

Stephanie Plum is down on her luck - she has lost her job as a lingerie buyer and needs to earn some money fast, or she won't be able to pay her rent. She's already hocked quite a few of her possessions, including some of her furniture. Her mother suggests that she ask her cousin Vinnie - a bail bondsman - about a job at his office. The problem is, the office job has already been filled. The only thing she can do for him to earn any money is to bring in the "customers" who have skipped out on their bail. A bounty hunter. How much can she make doing that? Well, it depends on how much bail was posted - and the biggest bail skipper on Vinnie's radar is a local cop named Joe Morelli. Morelli happens to be an old flame of Stephanie's - if you can call a couple of one-night romps a flame. She decides to go after him, but she really doesn't know what she is doing as a bounty hunter and is likely to get herself killed. Her experiences during this chase are not only suspenseful and full of action, they are often very funny. She has a major attitude - and I always appreciate someone who can speak fluent sarcasm. The scenes with her family - particularly her grandmother - and Joe's mother are fantastic.

Miss Plum has the littlest bit of a potty mouth and there are some scenes that are slightly graphic, so if you are looking for pure as the driven snow, look elsewhere. However, if you like action, humor, attitude, and a little romance and don't mind a little coarseness, give this one a read! ( )
