I still really enjoy the "witch" series by Naylor. In this one, there's some subtextual commentary on cliques and the way groups of girls tend to alienate and ostracize each other arbitrarily. Mouse and Lynn are trying to spend the summer avoiding witchcraft; however, a group of girls from their school form a coven which is overseen by the ~spirit~ of dead Mrs. Tuggle. They start harassing Lynn and Mouse, and then Mouse joins their group in an effort to use the coven to perform witchcraft which will bring her mother back. The book ends on an ominous note when Lynn sets a fire to burn up the witch weed (which has some magical properties? I forget) growing behind her house. She almost burns up her whole neighborhood.

It's a good series because it takes girls 11-14 seriously, spending time analyzing their various problems (parents don't understand them/believe in them; parents aren't there for them/supportive; other girls are mean to them for no reason; uncertainty about their futures; etc. etc. and other growing pain type problems) through the lens of witchcraft which is always enticing to girls of this age. Witchcraft - using it, fighting it, and so on - acts as a way for them to channel their anger and fear while empowering them (literally, I guess). ( )
