English summary: Paradise of the "Beautiful Savages": For the European traveller at around 1900, the South Seas were connected with the desire for alien beauty and the fascination of the nativeness of the people. The paintings of Emil Nolde and Max Pechstein, e. G., attest to this view. In this volume, the romanticising view of the artist is contrasted with historical reality: precious works of art and cult objects, belonging to an almost extinguished artistic tradition and most of them hitherto unknown, who arrived in Europe via merchants, missionaries, or colonial civil servants. Furthermore, eminent ethnologists, art historians, and biologists describe the colonial period both from the viewpoint of the natives as well as the alien Europeans.
