This compilation, sponsored by ECLAC, focuses on competition policy, i.e., antitrust law and the actions of competition agencies, with a special, but not exclusive, focus on telecommunications and banking in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Panama. Because of their smaller size, the Central American countries are particularly susceptible to monopolistic practices either by large firms or cartels; Mexico, historically linked to Central America, with its own legislation and agencies, has influenced the latter's competition legislation. The authors examine market distortions and the governmental responses, and then provide suggestions for improvement. (For English-language version, see Schatan, Claudia and Eugenio Rivera, eds., {Competition Policies in Emerging Economies: Lessons and Challenges from Central America and Mexico}, item #bi2010004164#).
