Fiction. Literature. Romance. Christian Fiction. Olivia Wallace has a birthday curse . . . or so she thinks. It was a broken heart on her 16th, a car accident on her 21st, pneumonia on her 30th, and a fall down a flight of stairs on her 35th. There were Ohio blizzards on her 38th, 39th, and 40th; and six days before her 45th, she lost the love of her life to a heart attack. Numbing grief stole that birthday and a couple more to follow and, on the morning of her 48th birthday, she received the call she'd dreaded ever since losing her mom so many years ago . . . she was diagnosed with stage-3 ovarian cancer. The doctors didn't hold out a lot of hope, but Liv survived and maintained her faith. Months of surgeries and chemotherapy and radiation treatments followed. But now, as her 50th birthday creeps up the icy Ohio path toward her, her hair has grown back, her energy level is up, and she is officially cancer free. It makes her nervous. After everything she's gone through, Liv hates the idea of driving on icy roads and returning to work as an O.R. nurse in a local Cincinnati hospital. Her best friend Hallie knows just the thing to break Liv out of the winter doldrums, while providing a safe haven of warmth, sunshine, and a time to regroup: a holiday in the Florida sunshine!.… (mais)

Fun and light and for all intents a romance story with a little Christian tinge to it. A widow in Ohio is trying to avoid her 50th birthday during the winter. Her best friend and neighbor convinces her to take a trip to FL. She meets a handsome man at the airport and shares the same row with him on the plane. She loses him in the airport and it seems as if that was the end of that. Low and behold that he actually is the neighbor for the house she's staying in. Over the course of the book their initial attraction turns into more through various twists and turns. A grumpy old neighbor, an alligator in the pool, a tree that smashes her nemesis's car. But will love prevail with one person in FL and the other in OH? ( )

This was a fun little romance with a nice, lightly spiritual tinge to it. Not overly so, but just the right amount. I appreciated that there were clear feelings developing between the two main characters (Liv and Jared) without them having to dive right into bed together.

One thing I found a bit distracting was that the whole story made 50 seem like it was really old. I found that a bit disturbing... maybe it's just because the 50-somethings I actually know in real life are younger at heart (and in appearance) than average? ( )

I have noticed that Sandra D. Bricker novels are like homes in the suburbs: it's all cookie cutter. They are all the same. There is always a widow or widower, this one had both, the rediscovery of love and faith in the Lord. Boy, is that hammer home.

I was raised as a Roman Catholic but it got a little ridiculous at one point. Everything was so convienent and saccahrine. Reading this novel was like watching a very bad Lifetime movie. Very bad. I was literally skimming the last 30 pages or so because it was so predictable.

If Bricker is trying to display religious escapism, then she succeeds. If she's trying to portray the religious escapsim as realism, then she fails. Horribly so. ( )

Liv and Jared are awesome, Hallie and Josie call it like they see it. I don't like romances but this is the exception! Very cute romance.
