The Hunger Games de Suzanne Collins (PamFamilyLibrary, kathleen.morrow)
PamFamilyLibrary: Intelligent, quickly paced YA dystopia.
kathleen.morrow: Both have strong heroines in a dystopian society. Additionally, both have an interesting, but not overpowering romantic subplot.

At only sixteen Gaia is following in her mothers footsteps as a midwife. There are parts of her job that are secret, such as the freckles and the tea, then there are parts of the job that are necessary, such as the advanced babies that are handed over to the Enclave to which all serve. Gaia has always blindly followed the rules of her society, never once questioning her part. That is until the night she delivers her first baby unassisted, the same night her parents are taken from her.

Inside the walls of the Enclave people live in luxury, a stark contrast to those living outside like Gaia. Only those born within the walls, or those advanced, are permitted among the privileged and for an outsider to enter is suicide. Gaia however is determined to enter the walls to save her parents, but what she finds under the surface of this idealistic society is dark and dangerous and try as she might she cannot escape without leaving someone she loves behind.

Birthmarked is a terrifying look into a future where the individual is insignificant when compared to the needs of society, where even babies are traded for resources and where among the elite love is only allowed to those genetically compatible. An outsider, a girl marked as undesirable, will create chaos in a dystopian society, waking people from their complacencies and getting them thinking about just what it means to serve a 'greater good'. Very excited to discover this is just the first in a series, with a lot more adventure to come. ( )

Great start!

I was very intrigued by this book. It is well-written and has plenty of twists and turns and mystery for my liking. I am also excited to read the next book because I have so many questions. ( )

Not bad. This is an old dystopian book that kept popping up on the screen in the Library so I thought I had better read it. Fast forward a few decades and the world is a wasteland; very hot where it hardly rains and Gaia Stone lives in the world of the "have nots"as an apprentice midwife to her mother. The "Haves"live inside a domed and walled city that has electricity and running water. Gaia lives outside in Wharfton which resembles a 15th Century village. But the residents of Wharfton have something that the Enclave needs - new genes. Every month, they claim 4 babies which Gaia's mum delivers, removes from the mother and then takes to the city gates. Everyone addresses themselves as Mabrother or Masister which takes some getting used to.
The book opens with Gaia delivering her first baby by herself and drugging the mother as is the custom. She then takes the baby girl and marks it feet with a tattoo as per her mother's instructions and then goes out into the night and delivers the baby to a nun like woman at the Enclave gate. On returning home though, she discovers that both her mother and father have been arrested by the enclave soldiers and one, Leon, the ex-crown prince of the city, is waiting to interrogate her.
What follows is a complex novel where Gaia must unravel her mother and father's special codes, co-operate with the Enclave, save innocent baby's lives and work out what is really going on...think BIG BROTHER...the Wharfton people are spied upon with hidden cameras by the Enclave rulers.
Fascinating and I can't wait to read the next book. ( )
