Read quite q few years ago, 4 1/2 stars because I don't currently have access.

Gray, a young girl struggling to recover from her own deep wounds, becomes involved with Chav, a mysterious and intriguing new boy in her class, who claims that he and his two younger siblings are searching for their father, the King of the Gypsies. ( )

A very rich story. Chav is fascinating - more so once we begin to get behind his mask. At the beginning the story reminded me rather of The Diddakoi, though we don't see events through Chav's eyes much then; but the actual story was even stronger. Nancy Springer writes magnificently about abuse survivors. And of course, there's the horses - Rom is wonderful, and even Paradiddle is great. I suspect this will reward rereading, in a while. I was wiping away tears so that I could continue to read for quite a bit of it. ( )

I just came across this book again and remembered loving it as a teen. Boy on a Black Horse and Dream of the Stone were two of my favorite reads as a young misunderstood, lovesick girl! Highly recommended. ( )
