Noodles: I Love School! is a great book to use for a guided reading exercise. It is an easy read for grades K-2 in my opinion. It follows a white dog on his first day of school. He is super excited about his first day and can't wait to get there. It is until he finally gets to school that his feelings change. He sees school as a big scary place and is lonely because there is no one to talk to. Eventually, Noodles makes lots of friends, finds lots of books to read, and realizes that school is fun! I give this book 5/5 stars because I think kids will love reading a story about a dog going to school just like them. We can also have a discussion about the way they felt own their first day of school.

I think that this is a good book because of the main character and the illustrations. The first reason I enjoyed this book was because the main character is a dog. Even though dogs cannot talk, the character was well-developed. As a reader, I could tell his excitement and his fears. I felt like I could relate to the character’s excitement of school when he said “School looks like fun, “and “What a big place!” However, the writer also did a good job at expressing the character’s fears when his excitement changed to anxiety at “Where is everyone?” I enjoyed that the main character was a dog and it made reading about school from a different perspective fun. However, even though it was a dog, the character was still developed and had feelings.
The second reason I enjoyed this book was because of the illustrations. The illustrations throughout the book enhance its’ meaning and are very vibrant. When the dog first gets to school, the picture of the dog is very happy and colorful. I can tell by the picture that the dog is excited due to him running and smiling. However, as the dog realizes he is scared, the illustrations change and the dog looks sad and fearful. I like that the emotions of the illustrations go along with the text well. When the dog is welcomed into the class, his smile returns and the illustration is happy.
The main idea of this book is to not be scared of going to school. When the dog first goes to school, he is excited and happy. However, once in the school, he feels scared and alone. By the end of the book, the dog realizes that school is not scary, but fun and a place to meet new friends. I think young readers can relate to this book as they begin going to school. I believe that when readers read this book, they will notice how the dog changed his attitude about school and realized it is a place for fun, learning, and friends. The dog realizes that it is ok to go to school and not be fearful. This book can teach readers to not be scared of something new and to try new things such as going to school. ( )

“I Love School!” was written by Hans Wilhelm. It’s about a small dog named Noodles. I think this book is funny. The story is funny because Noodles is not scary, but Noodles is scared. Seven year old children can read this book. I give this book five out of five stars! - Ashley Lim, Ivy Class, February 2018
