Inspired new translations of the work of one of the world's greatest fabulistsTold in an elegant style, Jean de la Fontaine's (1621-95) charming animal fables depict sly foxes and scheming cats, vain birds and greedy wolves, all of which subtly express his penetrating insights into French society and the beasts found in all of us. Norman R. Shapiro has been translating La Fontaine's fables for over twenty years, capturing the original work's lively mix of plain and archaic language. These were harder then I thought to read. Proves that kids back in the 1600s had a better education then we do today. This is the type of read I usually don't really read in the summer though. The main reason I picked this up was the wallpaper in my room comes from these fables and I though it might be a quick read. I probably reread these again some other time. ( )

This book is "Fables" or "The Fables" written by the French author Jean de La Fontaine. These are not the same as Aesop's Fables. Do not combine Aesop's Fables with La Fontaine's Fables.
