Just enough sexual innuendo to make it inappropriate f kids—at least f now. ( ![]() I picked up the prequal in my local little free library, so thought I should reread the trilogy beforehand. Just as good as the first, though more heartbreaking. I am a fan of this series, not just a book for teens. Interesting story and concept. On to the last book and things are getting more interesting by the page. The writing style was just as distracting and unappealing as it was in the first book, [b:The Hunger Games|2767052|The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1)|Suzanne Collins|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1326003698s/2767052.jpg|2792775], though by this time I was able to mostly ignore it. The story was gripping, and the plot was mostly enjoyable. I still admired Katniss Everdeen's desire to take care of those around her, and I appreciated her willingness to sacrifice herself for Peeta. Soon, however, my positive opinion of her was eclipsed by her lack of empathy and her abrasive personality. She had also seemed, up to this point, to be remarkably slow-witted when it comes to issues related to the revolts and to her (terribly overdone) love triangle. This is one of the dangers of a first person narrative; since the reader and the narrator have the same information, the reader can never come to a conclusion too far ahead of the narrator without risking making the narrator seem unintelligent or blinded. By the end of this book, I was ready for the series to be over, and for Katniss to die.
Collins has done that rare thing. She has written a sequel that improves upon the first book. As a reader, I felt excited and even hopeful: could it be that this series and its characters were actually going somewhere? The author describes her wearing a series of Cher-worthy costumes in which she confronts poisonous mists, deranged monkeys, and a flock of ''candy pink'' birds equipped with long beaks used to skewer human necks. Great stuff, this. Unfortunately, such startling apparitions too quickly appear and disappear, baubles randomly affixed to a story that's been stretched to gossamer thinness.
