Quando John Grisham tentou publicar seu primeiro romance, teve muita dificuldade em encontrar uma editora por causa do conteúdo controverso dessa história. Há quem goste, há quem ou despreze como propaganda que apoia assassinato por vingança e retrata unilateralmente o racismo, apresentando os negros como vítimas e os brancos do sul dos Estados Unidos como vilões racistas primitivos. Resumo da ópera: você enviaria o pai vingador para a câmara de gás ou faria o mesmo em seu lugar? Nos EUA, não creio que certas coisas desaparecerão no futuro próximo (racismo é uma delas). Pessoalmente, porém, prefiro ver um intenso drama emocional de vida a um lixo de propaganda. ( )
