Somewhat disjointed combination of travelogue (Austria from about the mid-1850s to post-World War I) and autobiography that can be a bit unpleasant in spots, as Douglas describes some of his childhood cruelties (like setting dogs on cats, or frightening relatives). Considering some of the later scandals Douglas was involved in, it gives one pause. Some of the footnotes to very obscure German-language material aren't very helpful, either. ( )
A lively and evocative account of a sojourn in various Austrian villages. The six-page index is ... a bit of fun, obviously designed to comfort the reader who regrets having come to the end of the text. The index is as informative, colourful and exuberant as the book itself. Pertence à série publicada
