This book details the life of the tenacious Harriet Quimby, the rst woman in the United States to earn a pilot’s license. Read about how she inspired other famous female pilots. I liked this book for many different reasons. I liked the plot of this book. The author makes this book have suspense and tension. For example, the author wrote, “But friends and family thought she had gone too far this time.” Harriet was a daring woman who wanted to fly across the world. The author included Harriet’s triumphs throughout the book. In the end, the author included Harriet’s biggest success yet: flying over the English Channel by herself. The illustrations were well drawn. All the characters were detailed and the colors were bright. This biography was written well because Harriett strengths are well presented. The author wrote the book for a targeted audience of 5-7 years old. This book also included a timeline in the back of the book of Aviation. There was also an author’s note that was included which explained in more details about Harriet Quimby. This was very informational and would be beneficial for students who were learning about Harriett Quimby in their classrooms. The main idea of this story was to describe the events and triumphs that Harriett Quimby achieved throughout her lifetime. The Daring Miss Quimby is a great biographical book. George Whitaker, the author of this book, adds a great sense of character when describing the life of Harriett Quimby. Small but very essential stories of Harriett provide the reader with a very accurate depiction of character this woman was. For instance, Harriett was along for a daring ride in a race car, the driver of the car went up to 100 miles per hour with Harriett in the passenger seat! Most people would find this to be very daring especially given the time period of when this took place, but Whitaker adds Harriett's remark, "T'wasn't very fast; can you make one hundred and twenty?" this gives the reader a further understanding of just how daring Harriett truly is. Furthermore, Catherine Stock's illustrations fill this book with color and capture the eye of the reader. The Daring Miss Quimby is a great biographical story about Harriett Quimby and just how empowering she was for future generation of women. I really like how Whitaker chose not to gloss over the fact that Harriet Quimby died in a plane crash. Quimby's story is inspiring and Whitaker brings her story full circle by not leaving out that in 2004 Quimby was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame. This is a great biography about a strong, ground breaking woman. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
In 1912, airplanes looked like bicycles with wings. Only men flew these scary new machines. When a spirited young woman named Harriet Quimby decided to learn to fly, everyone said it would be too dangerous. But Harriet tried it anyway! She was the first woman in the United States to earn her pilot's license. Soon the whole country was just wild about her! Harriet loved the attention and designed a purple flight suit to stand out even more. Before long she was the first woman to fly across the English Channel.
