With Uncle Chestnut, the ordinary becomes extraordinary and every day is an adventure - whether you are chasing hats, babysitting, or just taking a day trip to the seaside. These humorous short stories of Uncle Chestnut introduce timeless truths and a refreshing perspective of the world, based on the life and works of G.K. Chesterton. This book is a collection of stories remembered by the nephew of writer G.K. Chesterton. Uncle Chestnut used stories to teach his nephew and friends stries about life. He turned simple everyday things and 'inconvenient' mishaps into great adventures. The stories are cute and definitely have a lesson to them but seems very wordy for a childrens book. ( )

Synopsis:

Gilbert Keith Chesterton had a profound influence on various historical figures. C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mahatma Gandhi, and Alfred Hitchcock have all credited G.K. Chesterton with influencing their lives. G.K. Chesterton wrote thousands of essays and articles, over 100 books, poems and plays.

In the first of a series, Paul Nowak shares four boyhood anecdotes with his Uncle Chester, the famous G.K. Chesterton. Each story has a moral, the lesson that Uncle Chestnut taught to his nephew Jack. The book also contains quotations taken from G.K. Chesterton's numerous writings.

Review:

The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut is a brief introduction to G.K. Chesterton. Although I had previously heard of G.K. Chesterton but knew little about him. The four short stories give a glimpse of the kindly and insightful man. While the book wasn't to my taste, I expect that it will appeal to many children and parents. It will provide people of all ages many hours of enjoyment and introduce a new generation to an important literary figure.

Here's one quote that gives a sense of Uncle Chestnut:

"An adventure is only an inconvenience considered the right way, and an inconvenience is an adventure considered the wrong way."

In The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut the author introduces young people to G. K. Chesterton through the character of Uncle Chester. I confess I was not familiar with G.K. Chesterton before I found this book, but now that I have investigated a little, I am looking forward to knowing more about this talented 20th Century writer. Just to learn that he wrote a book that led C.S. Lewis to become a Christian has made me interested in him.

With four short stories the author tells about a young man’s relationship with his Uncle Chestnut, an interesting and entertaining character. The stories and interaction between them are both funny and touching. Along with the stories is a chapter on the real Chesterton and some of his quotations. There is also a “Words to Know” section to assist young readers with some words they may not understand.

I enjoyed the book very much. This is a great book for a family member, a gift, and certainly should be in every middle school age classroom. ( )

Uncle Chestnut is a great storyteller, and he enjoys telling them as much as Jack enjoys listening to them. He makes faces, uses voices and acts out parts of the tale he’s telling. When I read this, my mind immediately went to my sixth grade teacher, Mr. Crawford (whose first name, coincidentally, was also Jack). Mr. Crawford didn’t teach history to us, he performed it. Like Uncle Chestnut, he made the stories come alive.

The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut isn’t a story, specifically, but rather more anecdotal. In the book Jack, the narrator, is remembering life with his eccentric writer-uncle. It’s full of wisdom and good sense that’s definitely lacking today. The author, Paul Nowak, was inspired by G.K. Chesterton, an early 20th century writer who inspired C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkein, Mahatma Gandhi, just to name a few. More recently, Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett have referenced, credited and even created characters based on Chesterton.

Some little things about the book, though… The only fault I could really find with it other than the few typos about which Nowak warned in the accompanying letter is this: It is too short. I had hardly settled in before it was over. I’m not saying it to be funny, I really mean that the length of the book actually left a negative feeling. You know, like when you go to the ice cream shop and order a large, thinking you are really going to get a treat, and they hand you a kiddie cone? Ultimately, somewhere down the line, it might be a good idea to consolidate books into a 200-300 or so page book. The other off thing I had to say about it is that it’s supposed to be kinda-sorta a kids book, but I’m not really sure it fits that. Maybe, IDK… it’s a bit Winnie-the-Pooh like in style, which was actually a very surprising thing to have captivated my kids attention. I haven’t read this book with them yet, so maybe they would really like it, but it just seems like something the kid inside the grown-up would like.

The aim of this little book is to introduce readers to the work of G.K. Chesterton (1874-1936) an influential 20th century English writer. It tells fictional stories that are based on events in Chesterton's life. It also conveys lessons that are based on Chesterton's writings. Paul Nowak is inspired by his own love of reading Chesterton and his desire to re-interpret him for young readers of today. The Inconvenient Adventures of Uncle Chestnut consists of four chapters which tell a story of a simple adventure experienced by Uncle Chestnut and his nephew Jack. After these four chapters there is a section with some information about G.K. Chesterton, a glossary of terms, quotes from G.K. Chesterton's writings and an authors note that tells about how he was inspired to write the book. It is intended as the first in a series of Uncle Chestnut books.

I really enjoyed this book and so did my eight year old daughter. It reminded me of the Paddington Bear books by Michael Bond because it is amusing for both adults and children. The dry English humor and the unique perspective of Uncle Chestnut bring to this book a delightful freshness. It is an interesting read whether or not you are familiar with the works of G.K. Chesterton. I found it very easy to imagine myself right there with Jack, trying to understand some of the strange behavior of Uncle Chestnut and not knowing whether to be proud or embarrassed by such a unique relative. The book is narrated by Jack and is told in a simple style that is perfect for children. It is peppered with little bits of wisdom that are grounded in daily life. It is through ordinary events like taking a train ride or babysitting toddlers that G.K. Chestertons ideas about life are revealed. I look forward to Paul Nowak's next installment of Uncle Chestnut.
