These later volumes deal with mercantilism, colonies and the sources and expenses of public finance. Smith is clearly oriented toward practice rather than theory, so the book is packed with economic data from the 1700s. His general conclusions are dispersed here and there and he seldom emphasizes them very much. But for non-specialist readers, I would definitely recommend only books IV-V of The Wealth of Nations since they contain most of the historically influential material. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
Smith's The Wealth of Nationswas the first comprehensive treatment of political economy. Originally delivered in the form of lectures at Glasgow, the book's publication in 1776 co-incided with America's Declaration of Independence. These volumes include Smith's assessment of the mercantile system, his advocacy of the freedom of commerce and industry, and his famous prophecy that 'America will be one of the foremost nations of the world'.
