Much of Betjeman's writing is as quintessentially English as the rattle of a tea cup in a provincial tea shop. But his writing aside, from the Fifties to the Seventies, Betjeman produced a series of films examining the vanishing beauty of English life. This remarkable collection brings together 60 of these programmes that had been lost. In them he looks at details of English life, such as a deserted railway station situated in miles of empty meadowland, the architecture of a Victorian church or the charm of a seaside guesthouse. This is a real treat for any fan of Betjeman, and a testament to Games's remarkable research and reconstruction.
For more than half a century, Betjeman's writings have awakened readers to the intimacy of English places--from the smell of gaslight in suburban churches, to the hissing of backwash on a shingle beach. Betjeman is England's greatest typologist: whether he's talking about a townhall or a teaship, he gets to the nub of what makes unexpected places--and unexpected people--tick. This new collection of his writings, arranged geographically, offers an essential gazetteer to the physical landmarks of Betjeman Country and the characters who inhabit it. A new addition to the popular series of Betjeman anthologies, following on from Trains and Buttered Toast and Tennis Whites and Teacakes, this is a treasure trove for any Betjeman fan and for anyone with a love for the rare, curious, and unique details of English life. Basically it is an edited collection (by author and historian Stephen Games) of television scripts or Betjeman’s suggested outlines and his letters to editors for program projects written by Betjeman for the BBC series on England’s countryside (or ”landskip as the author called it !). Another reviewer notes that it was hard to read the scripts without being distracted by his memories of the original documentaries … so therein was my advantage as I never watch TV, I had never seen them. Betjeman’s skill as a poet and his craftsmanship as an author was therefore was able to create strong ‘mind-pictures’ as I read this work.
Although it was obvious from the pieces that they were intended to accompany a visual medium, they are instead able to create strong personal visuals for the reader of scenes he describes. Despite knowing only a few of the places he visits, and hardly any of those outside of my own home-county of Kent, I was able to appreciate the views and the architecture the author portrays.
It is a very ‘English’ book indeed from the beautiful nostalgic cover (from the railway art of the Great Western) to the echo of Betjemen’s giggles of wit.
