While on his way to school one day, Russell decided to take a shortcut, and he made his way to Long Meadow Pond. Suddenly, Russell’s math book fell out of his backpack and into the pond. He pulled the soggy book out of the water and went to school. His teacher asked what had happened and he told her it was an accident. While opening his book, a little fish slid out. The fish was not moving and Russell had a hard time concentrating during class. He decided to make a paper boat and name it “Take Care.” After school, he ran to the pond and put the fish in the paper boat. As the boat sailed away, Russell waved and said, “Take care.” This is a wonderful book to teach students about feelings. Russell not being able to concentrate in class showed that he cared for the fish, and throughout the illustrations readers will be able to see that. Cazet’s watercolor illustrations really bring the heartfelt story to life. ( )

The main thing that stood out to me about this book was the illustrations. The use of water paint was an excellent choice. The pictures were very detailed and will help learning readers as a context clue if they get stuck on a word or a sentence. Russell is the main character in the book and on his way to school he drops his book in a pond. When he brings the wet book to school, he realizes there is a fish inside the book. He does not know what to do and neither does his teacher. He put the fish in his pocket and all day he could not concentrate. He just kept thinking about what he should do with the fish. During art, he makes a boat for the fish and after school he brings the fish back to the pond, puts the fish in the boat and says "take care." This book is a fun and easy read for emerging readers. I like the involvement of the teacher in this book. The illustrations are nice, the ending is sweet, and my daughter liked it. ( )
