Jeremy Northam has the prettiest eyes! This is an absolute winner at catching Austen's spirit and intent. Bravo!

Somehow Paltrow manages to pull off pretty much whatever she does, and this is no exception. I have no intrinsic reason to want to like this film, but I can't help it. The story of matchmaking Emma is not quite so serious as some of Austen's other works, and this is a very enjoyable film. ( )

This didn't make me laugh as hard as the Colin Firth Pride and Prejudice or make me cry like Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility--but I do love it and it is fun. Paltrow is a fine comedic actress and this has some fine not-so-comedic moments. Such as when Emma humiliates this poor women and Mr Knightly upbraids her for it--a small moment, but also a turning point in humbling Emma. It's all so nicely done--and is the kind of film that bears rewatching--in a DVD that's important. ( )

Kaum jemand hatte Probleme mit dem Akzent der Amerikanerin Gwyneth Paltrow in dieser bezaubernden Adaption des Romanklassikers von Jane Austen aus dem Jahr 1996. (Dieser Roman diente ürbigens auch als Inspiration für den Teenie-Film Clueless -- Was sonst!). Aber auch wenn der Akzent nicht so ganz authentisch ist: In diesem Film tummeln sich eine Menge spielfreudiger, überzeugender und charmanter britischer Schauspieler. Regie in dieser wunderbar witzigen und intelligenten Komödie führte Drehbuchautor Douglas McGrath (er war Ko-Autor des Drehbuchs von Woody Allens Bullets over Broadway). In der Besetzungsliste finden sich Namen wie Juliet Stevenson (Wie verrückt und aus tiefstem Herzen), Alan Cumming (Buddy), Phyllidia Law (Viel Lärm um Nichts), Ewan McGregor (der schottische Star aus Trainspotting) und nicht zuletzt die herausragende und zum Schluss herzerweichende Sophie Thompson in der Rolle der ewig redenden Miss Bates. Paltrow spielt Austens liebenswerte Kupplerin Emma Woodhouse, die so sehr damit beschäftigt ist, das Leben und die Liebe anderer zu arrangieren, dass sie dabei fast ihr eigenes aus den Augen verliert. McGrath führt den Film mit leichter Hand. Seine beste Entscheidung war es, den Schauspielern kreative Freiheit einzuräumen. --Tom Keogh ( )
