The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. But Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves--Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.--From publisher description.… (mais)

In all the planets she had lived on, all the species she had lived as, Wonderer had never before experienced such emotion, such violence and such resistance as she did with her human host. It wasn't supposed to be this way, the human hosts previous consciousness was supposed to fade away. But this human Melanie, her new host, wasn't leaving without a fight.

Melanie was a constant presence in her mind, a loud, angry and strong presence, trapped inside her who refused to fade away, refused to give up her secrets, refused to let go of the person she once was, of the people she loved most. Wonderer knew all this, felt all this and couldn't help being influenced by her hosts body, couldn't help loving those Melanie had loved.

The choice to venture off alone to find the humans that Melanie and she both love is really no choice at all, despite the fact that the humans are dangerous, violent creatures. But when she finds these humans they both love, they see only the monster who has taken their Melanie from them. Although Melanie still exists inside her, is it really possible for Wonderer to go on living as two people.

The Host is a science fiction romance that goes the heart of what it is to be human. A love story at the end of the world, where humans as we know them are being hunted to extinction, their very consciousness being replaced by alien souls. This is the story of one souls experience of humanity, the violence, the emotions, the irrational natures and the love that is the only hope humans have left. ( )

This book was fantastic. I liked the world-building and the concept with the souls. It's science-fiction was great and I liked the main character Wanda. It was an emotional read. ( )

Nowhere NEAR as good as Meyer's Twilight series. It was compulsively readable in terms of the plot, but emotionally overwrought and essentially cheesy. ( )

This book starts out with a very compelling and interesting thought, much more a standard science fiction approach. It asks questions about the individuality of self, the essence of being human, what role does the community play in humanity, how community can influence the individual and visa versa - so many good questions that deserve a critical response. However, Meyer departs rather rapidly from these larger, more profound questions and returns to the vapid and inane thoughts of a immature love/lust/desire. While the book is not entirely without merit, it had so much more potential to inspire and examine than the author used.

Few moments are quite so apparent as when the protagonist is rescued/captured the rebel cell of surviving humans. By this point as reader, we are conflicted - we identify with the alien Wanderer and her human host Melanie. We can see both sides and in sympathize with both. When captured, the humans are almost seen as the enemy. This continuing conflict, so effective in the first few scenes, dissipates so quickly. Meyer resorts to simply plot devices to keep the main character safe without ever fully evoking the sense of sacrifice that could have made the scene truly enlightening. The reader is never really forced to deal with larger answer as Meyer takes the question away too quickly to be fully realized.

Between the simplified/kiddy-friendly approach and the overall length, the novel becomes trite and boring after the first half - almost a pain to read with its plodding pace. The concept could have been an amazing short-story or short novel. The book's length would have been better put to use examining the larger issues initially glimpsed. ( )

I really liked the world of this book. This book was well-written and was able to evoke my emotions for the main character. The beginning was a little bit confusing, but after I got past the first few chapters, I was able to understand what was happening and got pulled into the book. ( )

The worst, and paradoxically the best, that can be said about The Host is that there is nothing really terrible about it. It did not cause me to twitch and groan at twisted metaphors or bad imagery (someday we will sit down and discuss the delights of Jackie Collins, shall we?). At no point did I scream “Get an editor, you moron!” as I’ve been known to do while reading… well, let’s call them Stephen K. and Anne R. Lack of internal logic did not cause me to hurl the book against the wall in frustration and disappointment. But, adequately written as it was, I can’t see myself recommending it to any of my BFFs, at least not to those who’ve done me any favors.

Prachtig, meeslepend verhaal.

Question
----------
Body my house
my horse my hound
what will I do
when you are fallen

Where will I sleep
How will I ride
What will I hunt

Where can I go
without my mount
all eager and quick
How will I know
in thicket ahead
is danger or treasure
When Body my good
bright dog is dead

How will it be
to lie in the sky
without roof or door
and wind for an eye

with cloud for a shift
how will I hide?
