Conan the Cimmerian--the boy-thief who became a mercenary, who fought and loved his way across fabled lands to become King of Aquilonia. Neither supernatural fiends nor demonic sorcery could oppose the barbarian warrior as he wielded his mighty sword and dispatched his enemies to a bloody doom on the battlefields of the legendary Hyborian age. Collected here in the chronological order they were first published are Robert E. Howard's definitive stories of Conan, exactly as he wrote them. A foreword and afterword by Stephen Jones provide a biography of Howard along with a comprehensive overview of his writing and background on the world of pulp fiction. World Fantasy Award-nominee Les Edwards contributes a black and white frontispiece, along with a gold embossed work on the leather-style cover, while Hugo Award- and Bram Stoker Award-winning editor and author Stephen Jones provides an insightful afterword. … (mais)

Necronomicon: The Best Weird Tales of H. P. Lovecraft de H. P. Lovecraft (simon_carr)
simon_carr: Another awesome compilation by the same publisher, this time Howard's contemporary, and friend, H.P. Lovecraft. A different style of course, but fans of one will certainly like the other.

Conan, Vol. 8: Black Colossus de Timothy Truman (simon_carr)
simon_carr: The best of the Dark Horse graphic novels in my opinion, a nice companion piece to the Howard originals.

The woman who became my wife gave me this as the first birthday gift from her in 2006. I'd better get around to reading this soon, as I've been reading bits and pieces of it over the years since... ( )

If you want to read everything Robert Howard ever wrote about Conan the Barbarian, this is the book. Reading through the entire omnibus (925 pp) you see pattern of his devices: beautiful women to rescue, horrid monsters to slay, formidable military opponents, demoniac wizards; yet he continually is able to surprise and delight with new plot twists and devices.

This book is best read one story at a time, with other reading material spaced in between; otherwise it becomes too much of one thing. The editors managed to get all of his written manuscripts on Conan in one volume so that I, who had read several Conan collections before, found at least half the volume new and fresh material.

In addition to the stories, Robert Howard also supplies a history of the Hyborean age and a description of its various races plus a world map. Afterward, there is a short biography of Robert Howard. ( )

as far as I'm concerned Howard is the Big Daddy of fantasy and these stories are his defining works ( )

Robert E. Lee Howardin kaikki Conan-novellit. Klassikko, joka ei ole menettänyt hitustakaan vakuuttavuudestaan. ( )

A deeply satisfying collection of all the Conan tales in a fine single volume with additional background material and a useful map. Conan is a fascinating archetypal hero. ( )

[Howard] might not be the best writer the world has seen, but his prose is vigorous and his storytelling talent is a match for the best in the field. There have been so many imitations of his work over the years—as well as not necessarily successful adaptations into other media like film and comics—that sometimes I think people forget just how entertaining the original material is.
