Tales from a Dog Catcher is based on the author's experiences in a smallish city in the northern suburbs of NYC. Reminiscent of both All Creatures Great and Small and Marley and Me, it offers the stories of everyday people who, whether by accident or design, come into contact with the sad, funny, and often profound world of an animal control officer.… (mais)

As an animal welfare advocate I was excited to read this. I have talked with the local animal control guys near me and they seem so jaded and unhappy. They never talk about the day to day job but, I thought saving animals would be a happy career. I was curious to read a real life, not made for TV retelling. I thought by the happy dog on the cover that these stories would be goofy, silly adventures. No, most of the stories dealt with the reality of the job. The Uglies, the abusive owners, the negligent owners, the delicate situations, it was mostly a tear jerker for this reader. There are some happy stories too, where creative ways of finding a solution made me cheer. It is a roller coaster ride emotionally and a very worthwhile read. ( )

As a relatively new dog-owner, I find myself much more drawn to books with "dog" in their titles. This book comes from a different viewpoint than most dog books, which tend to be written either by veterinarians or doting dog-owners. Lisa Duffy, as she was then, served as Animal Control Officer in the police department of her small hometown in the Hudson River Valley, while working her way through college. Some of her stories are funny, others will make you angry, still others are either heartwarming or heartrending. Although she dealt mostly with cats and dogs, a duck, turkeys, raccoons and a skunk also make appearances. This is a quick and very enjoyable afternoon's reading. ( )

This book is a collection of stories about Lisa’s job as an Animal Control Officer in Annesville, New York. Her memories run the gamut of emotions from frustratingly sad to hysterically funny. There are quirky tales like the one called Randy Raccoons, about peeping toms and the blonde bombshell, to the one about a homicidal Great Dane. More than animal stories, it is her interaction with the humans that leave a lasting impression. These are not cold clinical case studies; they are part of the history of how we view our relationship with the animals that share our lives. Her tongue and cheek humor shines through-out. That she was able to keep a soft heart in a job that could have hardened the hearts of most of us makes this a great read. ( )

This is an excellent book if you love animal stories. I have seen her compared to James Herriot and I would agree! One of my new favorites! ( )
