This is the true story of a horse named Brigadier who was chosen to work with the Toronto Mounted Police. The book tells how Brigadier was trained and worked during his time on the Mounted Police Unit. The story was good although it lacked in the emoyional, compassionate department. It was a bit dry and could have been made better by adding the compassion. All in all it is a wonderful story and I would reccommend it to young adults and for those who like animal stories and horses in general. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. "Brigadier: Gentle Hero" is a young adult nonfiction book about the life of a horse that served in the Mounted Unit of the Toronto Police Department. It's an informative book, with much information about training and procedures. I learned a lot, and felt moved and sad, as well as happy, at some points in the book. But at the same time, I felt that much of the book was written in a style I found dry and impersonal. There is little in the way of direct quotes or input by the people who trained and worked with Brigadier. For instance, in chapter six, we are told how Kevin would go into Brigadier's stall to sit and talk with Brigadier as the horse was lying down. As I read that passage, I thought how much more interesting it might be to be reading Kevin's own reminiscences about it. One thing I wondered about is why the portrait of Brigadier that is mentioned so prominently is not reproduced in this book. Copyright issues, I suppose. A good book for children or young adults, or anyone interested in horses. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. This is a nice short story about an unusual Canadian hero, a police horse. It is well written and very well illustrated, although I almost feel a lack of enthusiasm from the author's side: maybe I just want to read more about this nice guy, more adventures and less scholastic explanations. I found it very good for children. This review was written for LibraryThing Member Giveaways. Brigadier is an easy-to-read story of a horse. I appreciated how the details of horse life and lingo are "translated" for non-horsey people. I laughed, I cried, and my heart goes out to those that are yet hurting from his loss. The true story of a gentle hero who won hearts and affection for his commitment to “serve and protect.” A big boy right from the start, Brig was a Belgian draft cross, or grade horse, with just the right temperament to earn his place on the Mounted Unit of the Toronto Police Department. Brigadier was a golden chestnut with four white socks, and his size alone was imposing. But that wasn’t why Sergeant Graham Acott chose this horse above all the others with such certainty. The animal’s large, intelligent, and gentle eyes were what struck him. This was a horse, and a partner, perfectly suited to the job for which he’d been bred. Brigadier never let Graham or anyone else down for a moment, and his years of service with the force were happy ones. When, on that last night, he turned into the path of an oncoming car and took the full force of its impact, he did what he was trained to do and he did it with the heart of a gentle hero. Thousands wept and were outraged by the senseless cruelty that ended Brig’s life. For his selfless act, Brigadier received full honors, a police funeral, and tributes from around the world. But his days of willing service, the smiles he brought, and his gift of companionship are what he will always be remembered for. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

This book will leave you both amazed and heartbroken. It is a tragic story, but one that should be told and known. This is targeted towards a young audience, but be aware that it is tragic. For that reason, I would advise parents to read it before their child. ( )
