Another thorough treatment of his subject by this writer. Not quite as enjoyable as his book on the Third Reich but it seemed confident and wide ranging. There is a good index, which in my ebook referred to the pages in the book but connected with the right place in my copy. The book is tremendously good value in Kindle. It is very good on church life and beliefs and on how things were for women and those who were sick. Perhaps it could have had more on agriculture. The last chapter talks helpfully about changes that were to come just after these medieval times. ( )

England in the Middle Ages doesn't sound like an appealing spot in space-time to me. It's no Renaissance Fair. Between the oppressive authority of the Church and the nobility, and high levels of crime, ignorance, and disease, it's history reads like some kind of dystopian fantasy novel. Not this particular book, though. It's informative but dry, with lots of compiled data and some statistics. Still, if you're ever tempted to nostalgic dreams of ages gone by, a bit of history like this will snap you out of it. ( )
