I like to take pictures of birds so it's very important to learn more about them. I loved that this book included problems that birds face but also solutions that people have come up with! I had no idea Chicago dimmed lights during bird migration or the at Anna's hummingbirds smack into clear windows so often that it's become a serious problem. I love Annas hummingbirds so this information made me so sad. Overall an important read! Children's science writer Melissa Stewart informs readers how human actions can affect bird populations. The book discusses many environmental issues. The best part of the book is that using various examples, the author illustrates the problems faced by different bird species and then gives a solution to those problems. The picture book portrays birds from different parts of North America. The first page shows the range of their habitat. Some of the examples used in the book are of well known birds like the spotted owl and the bald eagle, while others are not so popular like the piping plover. However every example is accompanied by an interesting story. For example, in the instance of the bald eagle, the author describes how chemicals like DDT have a detrimental effect on their population or how oil spills wiped out the population of the common muree from the coast of Alaska. Children will also learn why birds are important to plants and other animal species. Points on how we can help birds are also included. The illustrations used in the book are colorful and diverse. They give a glimpse of the environment in which these birds inhabit. The book can be used for young adults, to address environmental issues like oil spills and their hazards or effect of chemicals and deforestation on our environment. It can be used as a precursor to a research project in which students can be asked to research other animal/ plant species that are being effected by human actions. They can also be asked to propose solutions. it is an informative book on birds and to protect them. This is a very well written book about the place that birds have in our world and the best way in which to protect them and their habitats. The recurring scaffold used in the text is highly effective and having read it to a few groups of children when it was nominated for the Keystone to Reading Book Award, I know that it was well received by every audience. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
