This is a double review, which includes "Sea Fire", as its the sequel to this book. I won't give too many details and spoil things, but I'll start by saying the story of Lady Catherine Audley and Captain Jonathan Hale is not always an easy one, though it'll keep you turning those pages.

From the start, when she's taken captive aboard his ship,(and falls victim to his forced seduction) to the finish, where they have a HEA in their mansion on dry land, you have more than the usual share of arguing, misunderstanding, rivalry, violence (he rapes her, she shoots him, as well as other lesser incidents), kidnapping, imprisonment, shipwreck, travel across the Atlantic, interfering relatives, blackmail.....well, you get the idea.

I would have given both books an extra star, but there are some things that bugged me. There was a bit too much arguing and misunderstanding, that really got to bug me. Once too often, Jon's attempts at seduction turned into rape or near rape, and one too many tines, Cathy gives into her desires, only to start ranting and raving at how she hates him and it'll never happen again. (Yeah, right.) The prison scenes are too long and too graphic (how m any times can one guy get jailed, for Heaven's sake; as necessary as it may be to the story, it got to be annoying), and more than once Cathy's blamed for betraying Jon, when it wasn't her fault. At one point, she has to make a heartbreaking sacrifice in order to save his life (her virtue is saved, but just barely) one that Jon should have figured out but , due to his insecurities over her wealthy, socially prominent background (she's the daughter of the British ambassador to Portugal), he's all too willing to believe she'd toss him aside for a man in her own social circle. His stubbornness causes more trouble to an already troubled relationship.

There are some great moments, like when, despite his hurt and anger, Jon kidnaps Cathy, determined to keep her with him while he plots revenge, because he just can't let her go. (This happens more than once.) Also, a harrowing storm at sea, which leaves the two of them shipwrecked on an island, which becomes a paradise for a time, despite Jon's unwillingness to trust Cathy, or admit his love for her. But before this happens, they're at sea in a skiff boat for a time, where a pregnant Cathy goes into labor, and Jon has to deliver the daughter that he doesn't believe is his!

There's so much over the top stuff, like when aboard ship, Jon gets back at Cathy when she's refusing to share his bed by sleeping with another woman, and she and Cathy have quite an explosive battle! Another time Jon's ordering Cathy about like one of the crew, so in front of everyone she dumps a bowl of stew over his head, then he picks her up and dips her head in the stew pot! Another time, back at Jon's southern plantation home, they're invited to a ball, where each tries to make the other jealous and almost causes them to break up. On it goes....

One thing I totally disapprove of, is their both using their children as a means of revenge. At one point, Jon takes their son away, leaving England for the states (at this point, he still believed Cathy had slept with another man and the baby wasn't his daughter). When Cathy later follows, she plans to do the same thing, and return to England with both her children. No matter what your problems are, you don't use your young children as weapons in your battle. SHAME ON THEM BOTH!

Therefore, one less star (both books deserved a lesser rating). Still, I recommend both books for those who like a lot of action and entertainment, and prefer their stories wild! ( )
