Flora has been expensively educated to do everything but earn her own living. When she is orphaned at 20, she decides her only option is to go and live with her relatives, the Starkadders, at Cold Comfort Farm. What relatives though. Flora feels it incumbent upon her to bring order into the chaos.

    Emma de Jane Austen (ncgraham)
ncgraham: Flora is very clearly modeled on Emma.
  2. 121
Northanger Abbey de Jane Austen (ncgraham)
    ncgraham: Another brilliant parody.
  3. 50
The Grand Sophy de Georgette Heyer (Bjace)
Bjace: While it's not in the same genre, the books are similiar. Both Sophy and Flora Post are Miss Fix-its, whose practical, problem-solving approach to life is a contrast to the silliness of their relatives. Also, both are delightful reads in different ways.

Mapp and Lucia de E. F. Benson (Michael.Rimmer)

Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions de Daniel Wallace (msouliere)

  7. 20
The Straight and Narrow Path de Honor Tracy (rebeccanyc)
rebeccanyc: Another satire, this time of the Irish countryside, the English in Ireland, and the Catholic church.
  8. 53
A Room with a View de E. M. Forster (upster)
    upster: It's refreshing and fun
  9. 10
Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day de Winifred Watson (amanda4242)
amanda4242: Both books are sure to cheer up anyone having a miserable day.
  10. 01
Precious Bane de Mary Webb (KayCliff)
KayCliff: The one is a parody of the other.
  11. 02
My Family and Other Animals de Gerald Durrell (MyriadBooks)
  12. 04
    O Arco-Íris de D. H. Lawrence (thorold)
thorold: The Rainbow is a great novel that's well worth reading for its own sake, but it's also the supreme example of the over-portentous way of writing about the countryside that makes the parody in Cold Comfort Farm so hilarious.

Interesting book written in 1932, apparently a parody of English "pastoral fiction". Writing seems surprisingly modern. If I hadn't read the intro I might mistake genre for something more along the lines of humorous chick-lit. ( )

Excellent. I absolutely loved this book even though I've never really read any of the "rural novel" genre it's parodying (with the exception of Wuthering Heights, if that counts-- I think it's a bit early, though). And speaking of literary traditions, I found a lot of Pratchett in the tone here. Does anyone know if she was an influence on his writing? Oh! And speaking of genre fiction (I'm on a roll here with the segues, guys) why did no one tell me that technically this is a sci-fi book?? It's set "in the near future" and features what seems to be Stella Gibbons inventing the concept of a video call? Absolutely wild. Pretty much a one-off, though, so very easy to miss. Finally, Gibbons' practice of marking out her own best passages with stars, so as to help readers and reviewers notice the best bits, is fantastic, and we should all aspire to that level of self-assuredness. Emma and the Yokels
Review of the Penguin Classics paperback edition (2006) of the 1932 original

Cold Comfort Farm was not on my radar at all, despite its inclusion on the 1001 Books List, until a delightful review & recommendation by my GR friend JimZ caught my eye.

Jim's recommendation included the 2006 edition with Roz Chast's cartoon cover which my own library was lacking, so a hunt in various online used book sites was required and was eventually successful.

As my lede hints at, Cold Comfort Farm is somewhat in the vein of Jane Austen's Emma, with the lead protagonist Flora Poste working to solve other people's problems whether it be with romantic goals or those of life-fulfillment. The setting is a exaggerated bleak English countryside farm with a group of characters each more eccentric than the next one. The comedy is broad but is still a delight and is especially a pleasure to read during these current days of lockdowns and grim predictions.

So why not 5-stars? The answers come a bit too easily for Flora Poste and several MacGuffins are left unexplained and some solutions are left behind closed doors. So it is a bit frustrating for the reader who wants to know all, or at least to know more. Still, it is a delight to read and chuckle over.

Trivia and Links
There is a prequel short story contained in the collection Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm (1940). One synopsis reads as: "The title story tells of a typical Christmas at the farm before the coming of Flora Poste. It is a parody of the worst sort of family Christmas: Adam Lambsbreath dresses up as Father Christmas in two of Judith's red shawls. There are unsuitable presents, unpleasant insertions into the pudding and Aunt Ada Doom orders Amos to carve the turkey, adding: 'Ay, would it were a vulture, 'twere more fitting!"

Cold Comfort Farm has been adapted twice for television. The 1968 adaptation can be viewed in full here dir. Peter Hammond. You can view the cast list, led by Alastair Sim as Amos Starkadder, and other details here.

The 1995 TV movie dir. John Schlesinger also had a limited release in theatres. A trailer for it can be viewed here. The cast list includes several popular actors who are still active today, led by Ian McKellen as Amos Starkadder, Kate Beckinsale as Flora Poste and Stephen Fry as MyBug. See the full cast list and other details here. ( )

A lot of good memories attached to reading this. It was on as a radio play during a family holiday and then by happenstance I found a copy of the book on that same holiday, so I experience the story twice simultaneously in different mediums. A lot of fun to read! ( )

The education bestowed upon Flora Poste by her parents had been expensive, athletic and prolonged; and when they died within a few weeks of one another during the annual epidemic of influenza or Spanish Plague which occured in her twentieth year, she was discovered to possess every art and grace save that of earning her own living.
To Anthony Pookworthy, Esq., A.B.S., L.L.R. My dear Tony, It is with something more than the natural deference of a tyro at the loveliest, most arduous and perverse of the arts in the presence of a master-craftsman that I lay this book before you. (From the Foreword)
