Fiction. Mystery. HTML:

When adoptee Lucille Jones comes to town researching her roots, Betsy Devonshire notices that she bears a remarkable resemblance to local Jan Henderson. Betsy introduces the look-alikes and they quickly hit it off. But then Jan's wealthy great-aunt is found dead. A stiff metal wire helped the elderly woman into her grave - a double-zero knitting needle, in fact. Just like the kind Jan knits with. Lucille begs Betsy to help clear her new friend's name. And while going through her aunt's effects, Jan finds an old pillow lined with an embroidered map of Lake Minnetonka. Betsy intends to follow the threads. Who knows - it could just possibly lead to buried treasure. Or, perhaps, to a secret that someone will kill to keep buriedÃ?… (mais)

These are all nice little cozy mysteries, set in a small town in Minnesota. Betsy Devonshire inherited a needlecraft shop when her sister was murdered and she keeps getting pulled into mysteries.
Betsy's friend Jan's great aunt dies, leaving Jan quite a bit of money. Jan's the lead suspect in the murder, but also on the scene is Lucille Jones, an adoptee come to town to research her roots and a dead ringer for Jan and also stands to inherit. Coincidence, or obvious murderer?
This was a slower, more family-focused tale. I liked the characterization of adoption and the exploration of the consequences. ( )

Nice story. Lucille was not what I expected her to be, so that was a little bit of a surprise. A little too much time was spent on Jan's family going through her Aunt's possessions after her death.

Godwin teaches a class on how to knit a sock. And an old embroidery holds the key to solving the mystery. ( )

Hmmm, I didn't see that ending coming. Next please. ( )

Betsy and her crowd of friends and employees are involved in another murder. This one is very different in the fact that most of the story is told without Betsy being there to 'sleuth'. I enjoyed the book a great deal but about half-way through it I realized that I was missing Betsy's viewpoint on some of the story. She ultimately solves the mystery so it wasn't that she was totally absent but she was not the center of the story. It was well done and a little different. Sometimes different is good and it worked here.

I'll keep reading the series and am looking forward to see how the next in the series plays out. ( )

The last book I have in the Betsy Devonshire series, though I think there is one more and I'll be picking that up soonish, what with all the birthday Amazon vouchers...

As one reviewer said, this is "less gripping" than some of the others, however I enjoyed the slightly slower and more expanded pace. A woman shows up in Excelsior who has a remarkable resemblance to one of Betsy's regular shoppers. When an elderly relative of the original woman dies, and the "secret twin" seems to stand to inherit, questions are raised all over the place, inside and outside the family. A good plot and while again I did guess whodunnit it was well done and a fun read. ( )
