The warmhearted story of the four March sisters: Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy growing up in 19th century America. Their happy family life is disturbed when their father leaves for the Civil War, and shaken further when mother must leave to nurse their wounded father back to health. But family love and loyalty keeps them together. As the years pass the girls become women and learn more about life and love. Louisa May Alcott's timeless classic shows the joys of growing up in a warm and loving family.

I knew the story fairly well already, having seen the 1994 movie adaptation, though I've never read the original book (yet). My daughter was new to the story though, and overall, she really enjoyed it. The rating reflects how much she liked it, and the missing half a star was because she was super disappointed that Jo and Laurie didn't end up together.

Though I worried that much of what I was reading to her was going to go above her head, even with the adaptation, she was able to understand most of it as we went. Or if she didn't understand something, she didn't really realize that she didn't. Now and then I'd stop and explain something that I thought she might not get (usually because of vernacular that is not in use these days) or that she questioned as we went.

I would recommend this book for children around 8-12, with the extra note that with younger kids, it might be helpful (and enjoyable) to read it with a parent or older sibling/friend. ( )

Well, there isn't really anything that I can say about this book that many don't already know about.

I initially watched the 1994 version of this movie and really enjoyed it. I never would have thought, 19 years later, I'd be reading the book because back then, I wasn't much of a [Book] reader...Especially of the classics. I read, but not often & it was usually centered around History of some sort (usually the Civil Rights Movement or Slavery)...

So, when I went into this book, I kind of knew what to expect but didn't quite remember all the details.

These Great Illustrated Classics, I believe, are the abridged version of the books to make it easier for younger readers to read the books and understand the language...I do own another copy of it which I believe is the full version of the book. I may read that version one day..But there are so many books I want to get to, I am not sure yet, but, I did really enjoy this story...

If you want to get into reading classics and still understand much of the language, these versions of books are one way to read them & still get a good jist of what the story is about. ( )

Summary:
This book is about four sisters living with their mother in New England. Their father is away serving as a chaplain in the Civil War, and the sisters struggle to support themselves and keep their household running despite the fact that the family recently lost its fortune. In the process, they become close friends with their wealthy neighbor Theodore Laurence. As the girls grow older each faces her own personal issues and moral challenges.

Personal reaction:
I enjoyed reading this story in grade school and my favorite charcter was Beth im very shy and i can relate to her being this way too.

Classroom extension ideas:
1.The students can do abook report over this story
2. The students can also write about their favorite and character and why thei are thier favorite. ( )

The Great Illustrated Classics are abridged versions for young readers. Please do not combine with the major work. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Il.... Please do not confuse them with the Illustrated Classics graphic novel adaptations, which are quite different. Thank you.
