Los Angeles detective Lena Gamble is a cop held in disgrace by department higher-ups for the explosive way her last case played out, though she's still hailed as a hero by her colleagues for catching the killer. For her punishment, she hasn't handled a real murder investigation in eight months. When the chief finally tosses her a case, she's thrilled until she gets a look at the scene: The victim is unidentified, and there are no witnesses, and no leads. Just the body, chopped into pieces and dropped in a Dumpster.… (mais)

The book is using a serial killer as the vehicle to talk about the CIA and its business of bringing drugs from South America into the US to finance its various political interferences. Some interesting stuff, but it drags on a bit. ( )

Lena Gabmel, L.A. Detective is given a case of a dismembered body that was found in a dumpster. Lena isn't liked by her superiour because of a former case where a police officer was involved and bad publicity of the police department resulted. For the last six months, as punishment, Lena had been doing administrative work. She wonders if she is being set up with this new case.

As she investigates the murder, she is sent a driver's license identifying the Jane Doe as Jennifer McBride. Unfortunately, when Lena attempts to notify the next of kin, the woman tells her that her daughter has been dead for two years. Lena now has to find out who the Jane Doe was, and why she stole the other woman's identity.

Lena works with Detective Rhoades and follow leads to a doctor named Fontaine. They know the doctor is hiding something but are ordered to tread lightly by their superiors.

The hunt for the killers goes through various trails, with the author providing some excellent plot twists to add to the tension. Lina discovers corruption and deceit within her department and believes that she may be the next target of the people attempting to keep the facts of the case from going public.

The plot was well developed and the gradual manner in which Lena figures out what was happening was excellent. As a character, Lena is determined, ready to stand alone if necessary to solve the killing, she also has the instinct to know just where to find the answers.
I was entertained by the story and recommend it. ( )

This is a sequel to "City of Fire", which I also gave 4½ stars, and together they are a wonderful new suspense series set in LA with an intelligent female detective and very well-plotted murder mysteries. Both books had surprise endings and kept me reading for hours till I'd finished them. Highly recommended! ( )

The Lost Witness is Robert Ellis's second novel to feature Detective Lenda Gamble. The first one, City of Fire, was the best book I read in 2007. The Lost Witness is just as good.

Warnings: 1. Read City of Fire first.
2. Don't start either one until you have enough time to devote to finishing the entire book.

The Lost Witness picks up eight months after the Romeo murder investigation. Lena Gamble has been stuck doing investigative paperwork on officer related shootings. She finally gets her chance to work another homicide, but everything seems to be working against her. The body is in multiple garbage bags in an alley. The victim has no identification, and there are no leads to the actual scene of the crime. She's working the case without a partner, and the media seems to have more information than she does.

This book is completely riveting. I could not wait to finish it, and I couldn't put it down, but I savored each word. It's refreshingly rare to find a both a great writer and a great suspense storyteller in one. ( )
