World-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol Dweck, in decades of research on achievement and success, has discovered a truly groundbreaking idea-the power of our mindset. Dweck explains why it's not just our abilities and talent that bring us success-but whether we approach them with a fixed or growth mindset. She makes clear why praising intelligence and ability doesn't foster self-esteem and lead to accomplishment, but may actually jeopardize success. With the right mindset, we can motivate our kids and help them to raise their grades, as well as reach our own goals-personal and professional. Dweck reveals what all great parents, teachers, CEOs, and athletes already know: how a simple idea about the brain can create a love of learning and a resilience that is the basis of great accomplishment in every area.… (mais)

Outliers: The Story of Success de Malcolm Gladwell (peter_vandenbrande)
(mais)

How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity, and the Hidden Power of Character de Paul Tough (bluenotebookonline)
bluenotebookonline: Tough goes broad on a range of non-cognitive factors that influence the likelihood that students will be successful (grit, perseverance, curiosity, etc.); Dweck goes deep on one factor (having a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset). Both are highly readable (though FWIW, I found Dweck repetitive and preferred Tough's book).… (mais)

Why Don't Students Like School: A Cognitive Scientist Answers Questions About How the Mind Works and What It Means for the Classroom de Daniel T. Willingham (bluenotebookonline)
bluenotebookonline: Very readable book on cognitive science as it applies to teaching and learning. One chapter features the growth mindset, and the others are fabulous as well.

Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well (Even When It Is Off Base, Unfair, Poorly Delivered, And, Frankly, You're Not in the Mood) de Douglas Stone (peter_vandenbrande)
(mais)

Great information about growth vs fixed mindset. There are lots of examples but there are actually too many. There were so many names and examples used it made it difficult to keep track sometimes and took away from the material ( )

I really enjoyed learning about different mindsets. I am trying to keep Carol's words in mind whenever disperation hits my heart or I feel I am close to failing in a challenge... ( )

Repetitive, but not in a bad way. It's like a sermon or a motivational talk in that it's beneficial to explore core ideas through relatable, familiar stories. Are you more of a Fixed Mindset, or more of a Growth Mindset? The definitions of both are exactly what they seem, one being flexible and adaptive and the other being mentally stalled. Recognizing where you fall into the Fixed Mindset trap, and then working to transition to a Growth Mindset is the goal. Obviously, it's vastly easier said than done. ( )

A must read for parents, teachers, and anyone seeking self improvement

An excellent analysis of how our minds work, and how we can change from the fixed mindset, which discourages challenges, difficult work, and move to the growth mindset. ( )
