This book was truly disappointing. I wanted to like it. It started off with a very promising storyline, but around a third of the way through the book it became clear that it wasn't going to pan out, and the end of the book was excruciating. Quite simply the plot, character development, and main character himself were all terrible. Very few of the motivations of characters' actions made sense, and the story itself wasn't compelling because it was so nonsensical.

After The Remains of the Day, I had assumed Ishiguro was a generically good writer, and that I would enjoy most of his books. Now I realize that Ishiguro is only worth reading when his topic is good. The Remains of the Day, while simple plot-wise, was the correct style of book for him to write. The plot lent itself naturally to the protagonist's introspection, and little needed to happen over the course of the book for it to remain compelling. When We Were Orphans, on the other hand, was set up initially as a very plot driven book to that point that it could not retain itself unless the speed and intrigue of the plot were maintained. I think Ishiguro's writing does not lend itself to this style, as the second half of this book demonstrates. ( )

‘When We Were Orphans’ is de 5e roman van de Japans-Britse schrijver Kazuo Ishiguro en verscheen oorspronkelijk in 2000. De verteller van het boek, Christopher Banks, is een typisch Ishiguro-karakter: wat eenzaam, observerend en analyserend van langs de zijlijn, moeite met sociale contacten, passief. Christopher heeft zijn vroege jeugd doorgebracht in Shanghai, tot zijn ouders spoorloos verdwenen en hij als 10-jarige naar een tante in Engeland werd gestuurd. Als het boek begint is Christopher al volwassen, werkt hij als privé-detective in Londen en vraagt hij zich nog altijd af wat er indertijd met zijn ouders is gebeurd.

Zijn verhaal schrijft hij op in 7 delen, die allemaal beginnen met een precieze datum en locatie, overwegend in de jaren 1930. Alles wat Christopher meemaakt, analyseert hij al schrijvend tot in het oneindige, of het nu gaat om de mensen die hij ontmoet tijdens lunches en recepties in Londen, of om herinneringen aan zijn vroege jeugd in Shanghai. De kleinste flarden herinnering pakt hij beet om ze vanuit elk mogelijk perspectief te onderzoeken: wat zou deze herinnering hem kunnen vertellen over zijn ouders en hun verdwijning? Zo construeert hij langzaam een verhaal met een clou. Maar klopt dat verhaal wel?

Als lezer verwonder je je over de passiviteit van Christopher: waarom gaat hij niet naar Shanghai om dingen ter plekke uit te zoeken? Waarom zoekt hij geen contact met oude bekenden die mogelijk meer weten? Het is een verademing dat hij halverwege het boek tóch naar Shanghai afreist, ook al overkomt dat hem eigenlijk een beetje. Het is dan 1937, Christopher is 25 jaar weggeweest. Terwijl de Britten hun luxe koloniale leventjes vrolijk voortzetten, woedt er aan de randen van de stad een oorlog. Het Japanse leger rukt op en ondertussen leveren de Chinese communisten en nationalisten onderlinge strijd.

Vanaf hier wordt het verhaal behoorlijk vreemd. Het begint er al mee dat Christopher schijnt te denken dat zijn ouders na al die jaren nog ergens opgesloten zitten en dat hij ze moet bevrijden. Hij onderneemt een aantal voor hem héél onkarakteristieke acties die ik hier om spoilers te vermijden niet benoem. Ook hangt het plot aan elkaar van té geconstrueerde toevalligheden, zoals de ontmoeting met een jeugdvriend en met een vriend van zijn ouders.

Ishiguro heeft een prachtige schrijfstijl: heel precies, tot op het detaillistische af en met meer aandacht voor beschrijving van karakters, hun (onderdrukte) emoties en de analyse van gedachten en herinneringen dan voor plot. Dat hij in deze roman in de tweede helft ineens met een plot vol actie komt is enerzijds verrassend, maar tegelijk zou je willen dat hij dat niet had gedaan. Het is nu een zo ongeloofwaardig verhaal geworden dat het irriteert, vooral omdat de historische context verder zo nauwgezet en realistisch is weergegeven. Wat dat betreft misschien goed dat de schrijver in latere romans zoals ‘Never Let Me Go’ en ‘Klara and the Sun’ meer de kant van de speculatieve fictie is opgegaan, waarin je makkelijker mee kan gaan in het surrealistische. Obviously, I have a big book crush on Ishiguro. When We Were Orphans isn't my favorite of his, but I did cry like a baby at the end. What is it about his books that gets to me? If I had to boil it down, I'd say it's that they're these beautiful tragedies. And (is this getting too sloppy?) that's what kills me about life. It's sad. It's beautiful. Gosh. I might start crying right now just thinking about it. ( )

When We Were Orphans may well be Ishiguro's most capacious book so far, in part because it stitches together his almost microscopic examination of self-delusion, as it plays out in lost men, with a much larger, often metaphorical look at complacency on a national scale.

Ein schreckliches Familiendrama. Eine historische Erzählung, die sich im China der Opiumkriege entfaltet, Kolonialismus, Bandenkrieg, es birgt, natürlich, auch die Geschichte einer vergeblichen Liebe, und es gehört zum Abenteuerlichen dieser Lektüre, dass wir alle paar Seiten der Illusion erliegen, nun aber endlich zu erahnen, worauf wir uns hier einzulassen haben. Ahnungen, die uns mit dem Wenden einer Seite weggeschlagen werden, was die Gedanken nicht unangenehm verwirrt, so wie wenn die Achterbahn abrupt die Richtung wechselt und es uns herumschleudert und wir die Gravidität der Gehirnmasse kribbelnd spüren. Kein Wunder, es ist die Lebensgeschichte eines Verrückten.
