Uncle Jed's Barbershop is a great little story about the love and determination of an uncle who had dreams in spite of the difficulty and odds against him. He saved and saved until his niece became ill and needed an expensive surgery. Then started all over again then the great depression came and he lost all his savings then he started all over again. Finally he opened his barbershop at a ripe old age!

Great story about the issues life brings and the financial struggles that causes many to put the hopes and dreams on hold. Wonderfully told true story with great realistic colorful illustration. ( )

Along with this book being a Coretta Scott King Award winner, it won a special place in my heart. The very warm and inviting plot, along with very friendly illustrations, sold me as a reader. As a young black girl with few male role models, I would have found this book very encouraging and would have kept it very close to my heart to keep reading and reading. I feel that this book, along with its bright and very vivid colors and shades give us, the reader,a clearer picture of what dreaming and believing in yourself at any age can do! ( )

A story about reaching goals and Civil Rights, segregation, the Great Depression.
This book packs a lot of historical information about the 1930s. It is a story about a young girl and his favorite Uncle Jed. Uncle Jed has a dream of owning his own barbershop. Unfortunately, he encounters a serious of events that sent him back on his savings. First, his favorite niece gets ill and needs surgery. With no one to turn to, the girl's father asks Uncle Jed to help and he gladly agrees. Then, the banks fail-Great Depression, and all of Uncle Jed's money is lost against. But Uncle Jed is undefeated. He continues to work, even though people can not pay him and saves every dime until he reached his goal years later. Even though it was a short time that Uncle Jed was able to enjoy his shop, he made it happen. He demonstrated that anything is possible if you truly want it.

This book is very inspiring. Students could read this book and write about a dream they have and steps to get their. What would be their back up plans if they were to encounter similar situations like Uncle Jed?
Also, they could use this book to draw a story plot. Students can identify story plot elements using details from this book and place them correctly on the diagram. ( )

" Uncle Jed's Barbershop"
This story is a great, it has great detail and definitions. For example, in the story segregation is mentioned; not all student may know what that means but in the story it tells what it means and gives examples. This story can be great for teaching history on the depression, segregation between races, not giving up on your dreams, and also giving to those in need. This story is great for teaching a multitude of activities over several subjects. The illustrations also give good examples of the picture that author describes in the text. ( )
