A lovely family, a dream realized, and obstacles overcome. ( ) This book would be good for intermediate ages. This book is about a man whose dream is to open up his own barbershop, but between helping his sick niece and the onset of The Great Depression, his dream is delayed until late in his life, but he still achieves it. I really like the historical aspect of this book, but also the importance of family that is emphasized. The only problematic aspect is the depth and complexity of the historical aspect and this is why it would be better for intermediate age readers. Uncle Jed's Barbershop is a great little story about the love and determination of an uncle who had dreams in spite of the difficulty and odds against him. He saved and saved until his niece became ill and needed an expensive surgery. Then started all over again then the great depression came and he lost all his savings then he started all over again. Finally he opened his barbershop at a ripe old age! Great story about the issues life brings and the financial struggles that causes many to put the hopes and dreams on hold. Wonderfully told true story with great realistic colorful illustration. Along with this book being a Coretta Scott King Award winner, it won a special place in my heart. The very warm and inviting plot, along with very friendly illustrations, sold me as a reader. As a young black girl with few male role models, I would have found this book very encouraging and would have kept it very close to my heart to keep reading and reading. I feel that this book, along with its bright and very vivid colors and shades give us, the reader,a clearer picture of what dreaming and believing in yourself at any age can do! sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
