Highsmith created a marvelously dark character in grifter Tom Ripley, and great tension in scenes of murder, thinking about murder, and trying to avoid being discovered. As in some of her other work there is psychological obsession and a homoerotic friendship, and her observations about people are pointed. I loved the wonderful details about places in Italy, and the subversive ending. A highly enjoyable book all around. There is nothing redeeming about his character, he doesn't feel remorse at all and he is incredibly lucky. But I guess he will forever see shadows wherever he is, and can never be completely free.
