Wempires by Daniel Pinkwater is a funny picture book about a young boy who decides to dress up as a vampire for school. After his school sends him home with a note telling him he can not wear his fangs the boy goes to bed upset. That night a few vampires or “wempires” sneak through his window for a midnight snack. As most people would think, they are vampires so they drink blood. However, Pinkwater throws a funny twist in when the Wempires only want ginger ale and chicken. After reading two books by Pinkwater I am really starting to enjoy his style of writing. His farfetched and funny stories along with his one-of-a-kind illustrations really do make a great combination. ( )

Another great and funny book by Daniel Pinkwater. In this quirky book, a young boy named Jonathan becomes obsessed with vampires after watching a vampire movie. He dresses like a vampire, and he evetualy even gets fake fangs too. He goes to school dressed like a vampire, and the teacher sends a note saying that he cannot dress like that for school. One night when he was sleeping, a few vampires came into his room, but they were nothing like what Jonathan expected real vampires to be. Moral of the book, do not always judge a book by its cover. ( )

When Jonathan sees a thrilling vampire movie, and decides to become a vampire himself, he soon runs into opposition, both from his teacher, who insists that he is not allowed to bite the other students, and from his parents, who threaten to "take steps." But when a trio of ginger-ale-drinking "Wempires" visit him late one night, Jonathan is confirmed in his belief that vampires are pretty cool...

Written and illustrated by Daniel Pinkwater, Wempires has all the tongue-in-cheek humor one would expect from this brilliant author. The disruption of reader expectation is something at which Pinkwater excels, and what could be more incongruous than the amiable trio of wempires, who address Jonathan as "sonnyboy," and think drinking blood is "icky?" An entertaining picture book, this would make an excellent selection for a Halloween story-hour. ( )

Not one of my favorites but an average Pinkwater is still better than 99% of everything else out there. ( )
