James Joyce (1882-1941) left his native Ireland in 1904 and spent most of the rest of his life in Europe, living at Trieste, Zurich and Paris, contending for many years with poverty, eye trouble, and the necessarily slow recognition of his most original genius. This recognition came to him after the publication in 1922 of Ulysses. For the rest of his life he was increasingly respected, and, as Mr Stewart says 'by the time he had died in 1941 there was little responsible literary opinion in either Europe or America that failed to acknowledge him as one of the most significant writers of the age.' Mr Stewart's appraisal makes plain the scope of Joyce's originality, and provides a guide to his work. Mr Stewart, who has been a student of Christ Church, Oxford, since 1949, is the author of Character and Motive in Shakespeare (1949) and the volume entitled Eight Modern Writers (1963) in Oxford History of English Literature. He also writes novels and detective stories. The Bibliography has been revised and brought up to date for this edition by Mr J. S. Atherton, whose study The Books at the Wake (1959) was widely recognized as a major contribution to Joycean studies. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
