I'll probably read the next one, but it's far from my favorite of hers, despite the extensive exploration of culture clash. I was expecting much more fantasy and it started to go in that direction then just veered off into straight up romance with some tiny fantasy parts thrown in and it felt like a waste. There was not enough to make the world feel real and different, the characters occasionally talked around the culture and history but there did feel like any real attempt at world building. I was intrigued by what I thought would be the main set up, why Fawn turned out to have some role in the odd knives used to kill the malices but it just veered off into Fawn and Dag love story. I had to skim past many pages of cringe-worthy sex scenes and it just never took up that plot line I wanted to know about again. I believe that there are more books in the series but I can't really care enough about the couple to drag through another novel about them. sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha

Young, pregnant Fawn Bluefield has just fled her family's farm to the city of Glassforge, where she encounters a patrol of the enigmatic soldier-sorcerers known as Lakewalkers. Fawn has heard stories about the Lakewalkers, wandering necromancers with no permanent homes and no possessions but the clothes they wear and the mysterious knives they carry. What she does not know is that the Lakewalkers are engaged in a perilous campaign against inhuman and immortal magical entities known as "malices." When Fawn is kidnapped by one of these creatures, it is up to Dag, an older Lakewalker heavy with sorrows and responsibilities, to rescue her. But in the ensuing struggle, it is not Dag but Fawn who kills the creature, at dire cost, and an uncanny accident befalls Dag's sharing knife, which unexpectedly binds their two fates together.
