A missing letter is the key to the whereabouts of Fort Freedom, the stockade that disappeared after the Revolutionary War. The fort is located somewhere within the boundaries of Shoreham and has been sought after for many years, not only for its historic value, but for the gold supposed to be hidden there by the early settlers. The Pine Lake Parkway construction job brings this unusual disappearance to public notice and, of course, wherever there is a mystery the Happy Hollisters are sure to be in the thick of it.And "thick" is just the right word, for it is hoped that the fort will be uncovered by the great bulldozers and steam shovels that are building the new Parkway. With dust and dirt flying and houses being torn down the Hollister children search the area for some clue that will lead them to the missing letter, the site of Fort Freedom, or both. Here is a fast-moving Hollister mystery that offers exciting adventure with narrow escapes from the dangers of the construction area and the false trail laid for the children by a man whose identity remains as much of a secret as the location of Fort Freedom.… (mais)

The Happy Hollisters and the Secret Fort (Happy Hollisters, #9) by Jerry West
Starts out where the town is making a new highway and there is talk of a hidden long lost fort. The kids track down those who would've been around in that time frame and learn some clues.
One man, Mr. Manger they find looking over their shoulder at the town museum and they find him other places-he is spying on them! Love the talk of the machinery needed to make the roads and how they all work.
Colorful characters that do the manual labor and love how they explain about their machines. My dad had most of them for his business but not the cat. Interesting to learn all about them.
Kids help other kids who might lose their house cuz of where the road has to go...
Love how it all works out and all about the fort. such hidden gems!
Sketches hand drawn are also excellent works of art. Love how kids are so generous to others even the men while they are working.
Of course the bully is present, getting used to him messing things up. ( )

The Happy Hollisters was my first favorite series of books. I was around 20 years late to the party, as the books were written in the 1950s and I was a young reader in the 1970s, but I loved them anyway. It is very interesting, nowadays, to see how different society was back then from how it is today. As an example, in the opening chapter of the book, a truck with two construction workers pulls up to the Hollister home to find directions to a construction site. The kids - aged between 12 and 6 - claim it would be faster to show them the way, so, after checking with Mom who gives them the OK, they all pile into the truck with these two strangers and drive away! While it may seem dangerously naïve today, one can't help but feel we have lost something along the way... ( )
