The Hardy Boys verge on science fiction so often I'm surprised the Stratemeyer Syndicate didn't get better at it. They had the latter 'Tom Swift' series and 'Rick Brant', but it never quite goes as far as you'd like. This time the boys are investigating the disappearance of Aunt Gertude's carton of important family papers - she's moving in! - and trying to draw up the perfect travel plan for a fussy, eccentric old man who wants to take a nice long vacation, all expenses paid, with the two young lads. The Hardy parents deem this a fine idea as its been summer vacation for twenty or so books. The man even promises them a true corker of a mystery if he's pleased by their efforts!

In the first case, there have been an awful lot of suspicious cartons being delivered - mostly to empty houses - and people arriving home to discover evidence that strangers have been using their houses and plates. The police don't know what to make of it. In the second case the boys have decided that their fussy man-friend who doesn't like traveling by air, rail or car and despises traditional cruises (too many nosy people?!) decide to book passage on a freighter. The trouble is, the travel agency refuses to book passages for the young men travelling alone with an unrelated older man of particular tastes. Approaching a ship's captain directly doesn't work as the Captain and his crew don't want any...mischief. Hmmm.

The wealthy man grows impatient, so the boys arrange for Chet and Biff to distract him with a fishing trip on the ocean. He really takes a shine to that idea.

All of this leads to investigations into frieghters that seems to vanish into thin air. The boys see it themselves. Can they untangle this mystery and book their berth?

I love talking about this book more than I actually liked reading it. Gosh, fellas, the subtext. It's interesting to note that the manuscript for this adventure was turned in by the widow of long-time ghostwriter for the series Leslie McFarlane. Amy McFarlane has a fresh take on the characters and even injects some humor that is decidely feminine. I liked the running gag where the young girl working as a receptionist for the travel agency aggressively flirts with Biff, much to his chagrin. Luckily she doesn't do this in front of Chet or her eyes might have been scratched out.

I absolutely loved Nancy Drew growing up. This was a series I latched on to for dear life and never let go. So after my obsession with Nancy Drew started to dwindle (mostly because I had read all the ones I could get my hands on), I moved on to The Hardy Boys because that was the natural next step, duh. Love the Hardy Boys (though they weren't quite as amazing and Nancy Drew and her friends). ( )

This was a solid Hardy Boys mystery, at least from the perspective of a thirtysomething. I particularly enjoyed all of the scenes set on boats. It's occasionally nutty but disbelief can still remain suspended. ( )

I loved this book because it featured travel and science. And I also enjoyed learning that their is a "little" Chet Morton in everyone. ( )
