I asked the sailor what an Elephant looked like; he replied that it was like nothing on earth. In the middle of the 18th century, a ship docks at Bristol with an extraordinary cargo: two young elephants. Bought by a wealthy landowner, they are taken to his estate in the English countryside. A stable boy, Tom Page, is given the task of caring for them. The Elephant Keeper is Tom's account of his life with the elephants. As the years pass, and as they journey across England, his relationship with the female elephant deepens in a startling manner. Along the way they meet incredulity, distrust and tragedy, and it is only their understanding of each other that keeps them together. Christopher Nicholson's charming and captivating novel explores notions of sexuality and violence, freedom and captivity, and the nature of story-telling -- but most of all it is the study of a profound and remarkable love between an elephant and a human being.… (mais)

I loved this book. The story is a love story of sorts between an elephant and the young man assigned to be her keeper. If you like animals this is a wonderful read. ( )

I loved this book from the first page to the very last. We follow Tom Page a young groom and now anew elephant keeper to a country estate in England and enjoy learning how to care and love these magnificent creatures as Tom creates a home for them in 18th century England.
I was able to feel the kinship with the elephant the same kinship that Tom Page, the elephant keeper has. . We all inhabit the same world, animals and people. The love for elephants that this novel manifests grew in my heart as well. This novel is gentle, sweet and thought provoking.
love this from a review "all told with a touch of the otherworldly elegance and wit of Babar." ( )

late 18th cent England — elephants from India
young stable boy — names them — Jenny Timothy lifelong bond travels English countryside to London — beauty + violence

England, 1766: After a long voyage from the East Indies, a ship docks in Bristol, England, and rumor quickly spreads about its unusual cargo—some say a mermaid is on board. A crowd forms, hoping to catch a glimpse of the magical creature. One crate after another is unpacked: a zebra, a leopard, and a baboon. There's no mermaid, but in the final two crates is something almost as magical—a pair of young elephants, in poor health but alive.

I seemed to fall into a little bit of a rut with elephant books in September. As a young boy Tom Page becomes “the elephant keeper” when two nearly dead Indian elephants are off loaded from a ship in Bristol England. In the late 18th century not a lot was known about elephants in England and Tom Page shares his learning experience with us in the pages of this book. A beautiful book … I loved it. ( )

The Elephant Keeper set in the 18th century is about a caretaker and his relationship with two elephants Timothy and Jenny. It's about the bond between them, the training, and the keeping. The devotion to Timothy and Jenny is charming, and engaging. From the very beginning Tom is a very likable character, though as the story progresses you begin to wonder if Tom has lost his marbles. The story gets wierd and loses momentum half way through. The "conversations" between Tom and the elephant were ridiculous, but if the author was trying to convey a love between them, well, he certainly did that. The writing was consistant with the time period. At times the story felt disjointed, but it wasn't so much so that you could get lost. Final word, The Elephant Keeper wasn't a hit, but it wasn't a miss either. I would give the author another try.
