This book traces the origin and development of the concept of worldview in philosophy and examines its appropriation in the social sciences. The seven essays carefully analyze the meanings and connections of commitments, worldviews and science. The papers in this volume were presented at a conference held in July 1985 at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan and are the fruit of a project on social philosophy sponsored jointly by Calvin College, The Free University of Amsterdam, and the Institute for Christian Studies in Toronto. Contents: On the Idea of Worldview and Its Relation to Philosophy, Albert M. Wolters; On Worldviews, James H. Olthuis; On Worldviews and Philosophy: A Response to Wolters and Olthuis, Jacob Klapwijk; On Christian Learning, Nicholas Wolterstorff; The Approach to Social Theory, Sander Griffioen; Sociology and Progress, Jan Verhoogt; Worldview and the Meaning of Work, P.J.D.
