4.5/5

A great read, I especially liked the world building. From the beginning, the world building was great with casual and good introductions and explanations. The map was awesome, of course. The concepts were really good with the dwarves, elves, Riders and a classic normal turned evil character.

Now, my favorite thing was definitely the dragons. If I were to rate the book based on how much I loved Saphira, I would give it 5 stars and more. I like good characters in a story and I was thoroughly happy with this book and how it handled development.

I didn't think it was slow because new things were being introduced so the pace didn't feel off considering how much establishment was there. I liked how things weren't rushed.

Some issues I saw were the scene transitions and the lack of time given to the combat training and development of Eragon. With any scenes that had a fight, they seemed to end soon and a transition would happen with Eragon waking up after fainting which soon felt overused and predictive. They weren't good in general either. I would've liked if there was more exploration of Eragon training and learning without just telling us that he's good. The ending could've been longer better with longer fighting sequences.

Nevertheless, for a fantasy newbie like me the book was really good and intriguing and I am starting Eldest asap. ( )

I don't know how I didn't get around to reviewing this earlier, but here it is. This book introduced me to the series, and I loved it at the time. Unfortunately for my reread of the series, which I started last year and I still haven't finished, its not really holding up after I have found so many wonderful books after joining goodreads. But still I think out of the first 3 that I have read this one is the best. ( )

My 10 year old son and I listened to this book together and had a great time. I very much enjoyed the story and the narration. We're moving on to book two! ( )

Eragon is a high fantasy adventure novel similar to The Lord of the Rings, and The Wheel of Time series. The series takes place in an alternate land where dragons and people coexist. The book is great for young audiences because the author was only 15 when he got the book published. It is a great inspirational read for other kids.

''Eragon,'' for all its flaws, is an authentic work of great talent. The story is gripping; it may move awkwardly, but it moves with force. The power of ''Eragon'' lies in its overall effects -- in the sweep of the story and the conviction of its storyteller. Here, Paolini is leagues ahead of most writers, and it is exactly here that his youth is on his side.

Eragon and Saphira run off with the village story teller, Brom, after the ra’zac kill his uncle, Garrow. They start to hunt the ra’zac in order to achieve revenge, however, Eragon received visions of an elf, Arya, who had been captured. They then instead went to the city she was held at, but Brom was killed. Eragon and Saphira were only just saved by their mysterious new friend, Murtagh. They go to the city where the elf is held, and, after Eragon himself got captured, they freed the elf. The elf is poisoned, however, so the group rushed to the rebel group, known as the Varden, in the dwarvish capital Farthen Dur. She is saved just in time to defend the city from an attack by the urgal, a monstrous race of beings being controlled by the powerful shade, Durza. In the midst of the fight Eragon, with the help of Arya and Saphira, defeats the shade bringing the battle to an end
