Into the Wilderness de Sara Donati (pollywannabook)
pollywannabook: The closest thing to Outlander out there. Diana Gabaldon even lent out the character of Claire for a cameo in this book

Wildfire at Midnight de Mary Stewart (LiddyGally)
LiddyGally: I recommend this book because the writing styles are in a similar vein rather than the stories being the same. Both, however, are set in the wilds of Scotland.

The Bronze Horseman de Paullina Simons (littlebear514)

Narrator is great! ( )

Seriously so good! Absolutely love the TV series and for the most part these are the same. Of course they had to tone down some of the things and the ending was changed a tad bit in the first season but this books no matter what you think of the TV series is a classic! Seriously Jamie and Claire are goals and I want me a man in a kilt. ( )

I had read this book prior, but when I received it in a First Reads giveaway, I read it again and felt that it was owed a review (although long-delayed.) Still, I don't want to get too in-depth, since there are tons of reviews out there already, especially considering this book has now been made into a popular television series.

I am still working my way through the whole of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series, but I still feel that this book, the first, is my favorite. There is something magical about the way the characters develop, and it isn't hard to get attached to Claire and Jamie right away. The language and writing style are beautiful, and the history sometimes brutal, but always captivating. This is one of those novels that I can pick up and immediately be transported to another time and place (although unfortunately, not literally.)

If you're a fan of romance and history, and inclined to appreciate Scotland, I highly recommend at least reading this novel. If you find you enjoy it, then continue on to the rest of the series! My only regret is that it has taken me a long time to get through all of the books. ( )

Didn't think that I was going to have the patience to finish this book. I've been looking forward to reading it for quite awhile, and when a friend (hi Devon :D ) started gushing about it, I bumped it up in my read priority. I'd just finished the first 3 Song of Fire and Ice books, so my mind was already in this quasi-fantasy mindset. However, this book is definitely NOT Game of Thrones. The pacing is oh so much slower and the characters not as compelling as most in that series.
It took me about half the book before I finally realized what the main issue was: the audiobook narrator was SOOOOOO slow. I switched to 2x speed and it greatly helped the pace without sacrificing very much, if any, comprehension. I frequently switch between ebook and audiobook versions, and the audiobook really frustrated me at 1x speed.
As far as the story, I was hoping that there would be more time travel elements, and I think that this book assumes a certain minimum familiarity with 18th Century English/Scottish/French history, as there were more than a few offhand remarks that obviously were supposed to MEAN SOMETHING; for instance: references to people being Jacobites. That term really meant almost nothing to me and pretty much was not explained.
Overall, it was a good book, and I'm glad that I stuck it out, as the last third of the book was much more interesting. ( )

So, this is a romance novel? Not my cup of tea, it appears. I was really enjoying the story and the history and the dialogue and characters, and then Claire and Jamie get married. I found myself growing impatient with their frequent encounters and the descriptions thereof, because they pulled attention from the actual story.

It will be noted, about that time as well, the story in general went a bit downhill. Married and in love, Jamie became an impossible fiction of a man, charming and well-spoken and educated as he was, with his impeccable timing for saving his wife from bodily harm or death (tho she managed her fair share of fantastical saves as well). The book’s events also seemed to become more convenient and contrived, in order to reach certain conclusions or check boxes in a list of items that the author felt necessary to include. Pre-marriage, the story flowed naturally and I felt eager to know what might happen next, post-marriage just wasn’t nearly as natural. Everything had a reason for being how it was, it all fit pat into its place, as if the point was no longer to tell the story, but to get the two main characters in bed. Not everything resolved prettily, and there was a bit of truth to the feelings and experiences described, but overall I ended up mostly bored, wishing it would be over.

I listened to the audiobook, and gave an entire star to Davina Porter’s amazing narration. She brought the characters to life with her warmth and attention to detail in a way that the “Scottish” or “English” accents of my imagination wouldn’t have ever been able to manage. Her abilities greatly contributed to my ability to finish the book at all.

People disappear all the time. Ask any policeman. Better yet, ask a journalist. Disappearances are bread-and-butter to journalists.
Young girls run away from home. Young children stray from their parents and are never seen again. Housewives reach the end of their tether and take the grocery money and a taxi to the station. International financiers change their names and vanish into the smoke of imported cigars.
Many of the lost will be found, eventually, dead or alive. Disappearances, after all, have explanations.
Usually.
