I wanted to read this after watching the new tv show. And the book is better (surprise, surprise). There are few things that bother me, but surprisingly few considering this highlander romance genre... I definitely want to read more. ( ![]() Well, I finished it... it was alright. I liked it as a fluffy, easy read that wasn't completely void of entertainment. But ultimately I have to admit that Claire and Jamie annoyed me more often than not and I just couldn't connect with them in any substantial way. Jonathan Randall felt a caricature of a villain, not nearly as nuanced as I like my "bad guys" to be. The plot kinda dragged along and when there was action, everything turned out ~just so~ with very little believable tragedy/peril except maybe the wolf fight but even that turned out fine. The final scene where Claire is revealed to be pregnant made me roll my eyes into the back of my skull. The only character I thought was interesting, Geillis Duncan, was killed pretty early on, though maybe through timetravelly magic she'll come back, but I probably won't be reading any more of this series. I did start watching the show, maybe I'll fare better with that. Within just a few pages the historical inaccuracies started to drive me up a wall, but the story held my interest until the love interests got married and the story lurched from one steamy sex scene to the next and lost any sort of coherent plot. Lots of smut, no plot, bad history. I didn't finish it. I enjoyed every minute of my two month read of this book. yes it took me awhile, with other responsibilities and every spare moment saved for reading. I love historical fiction and this book gave me adventure, mystery, action, light comedy and romance. There were certain parts that were difficult to get through, but necessary to the story. Surprisingly, for me, one of the best parts of the book was towards the end, the conversation between Claire and one of the monks at the abbey (no spoilers). I enjoyed this first book thoroughly! on to the next! To be fair, I did a fair amount of skimming the sketchier parts.
I absolutely loved this book. It was filled with action, adventure, and romance. I flew through the book and can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Hurtled back through time more than two hundred years to Scotland in 1743, Claire Randall finds herself caught in the midst of an unfamiliar world torn apart by violence, pestilence, and revolution and haunted by her growing feelings for James Fraser, a young soldier.
