Another DNF... I got over halfway on this one though because at first I genuinely enjoyed it. The fantasy element played on my childhood nostalgia, but eventually the flat characters and predictability made me wonder how I would keep with it for another 200 pages (nevermind that this doesn't appear to be able to pass the Bechdel test). Onward and upward. ( )

Wow! Great storytelling in this book. I remember the story of The Little Nettle Girl whose brothers were enchanted into swans and she had to sew shirts of nettle for them to become human but Marillier takes it to a whole other level. I was engrossed from start to finish; stayed up all night to read! The 7 siblings of Sevenwaters are cursed and the 7th child Sorcha must brave wilds and trials to free them alone & in enemy territory. 📚📚📚📚 ( )

Once again, enjoyable, but as this is an earlier book, I can see that the repetitiveness has been there from the beginning and also a couple of the 'plot' devices-- one being the person who just can't believe someone might care for them -- . Also the meme of the talkative bad guy. I realize you can't have a book if everyone behaves sensibly, so OK, but that character could have made her choice in that instance for other reasons, even knowing the other person truly cared for her -- to me -- that would be potentially more interesting, but whatever. This is genre reading and while variation is permitted, not too much of it! So enjoyable nonetheless. ***1/2 ( )

I don't remember when exactly I read this book, only that I remember raving about it to one of my favourite authors (who has put up with my emails and messages for many years now). It was the first book of Marillier's that I had read, although by now I have read most of her works, and only "Wolfskin" rivals it as my favourite of hers. ( )

Roughly based on the Wild Swans by Hans Christian Andersen, this book is an Irish version. Sorcha is the daughter, seventh child after six brothers, living in Erin at a time of transition. The old ways are fading as Christianity creeps across the country. Vikings and Britons raid and there are constant internal wars between the chiefs. Sorcha is a healer and a child of the old ways, attuned to the forest of Sevenwaters where she lives. When her father brings home a new wife, the lives of the siblings are changed forever.
I can't say enough about how lovely this writing is. Ms. Marillier invokes the sights and smells of the forest with lyrical prose that is a delight to read. She has organically interspersed old tales and legends within the main story, consistent with a story about a country of bards and storytellers. Sorcha's trials are many and cruel; she is a strong woman determined to save her brothers and their home from their evil stepmother. I devoured this book, alternately sighing and occasionally crying over a sad scene. I can't wait to read the next book in the series and highly recommend this for all lovers of things Irish and fantasy. ( )
