Cave Art may well be the definitive work on Paleolithic rock art to date, and will appeal to both the general reader and the enthusiast. Lavishly illustrated, the book is comprised of photos of an extraordinary variety of pre-historic rock art, several of which have never before been printed. Furthermore, the art is arranged chronologically by site, a feature that helps in establishing the context of the art and in comparing the style and content of individual works within one location. Jean Clottes is one of the world's foremost experts in the field, and his commentary on each work is generous and illuminating. He also provides an introduction with an overview of the dating, themes, techniques, and interpetations of the art. Thankfully, he doesn't limit the book's purview to the caves of SW Europe--though that is certainly the focus--but also includes examples of portable art and examines some rock art of the prehistoric Americas, E Europe, Asia, and Africa. This is a beautiful book, highly recommended. ( ) sem resenhas | adicionar uma resenha
