A couple of Maugham's novels are among my favorites. There is a focus on a unconventional approach to life that I really like along with what I consider his excellent use of language.

I like the language of the play and particularly enjoyed the first act, but then it almost seems to rely entirely on the unconventionality of Constance's approach to marriage, which I get early on and think is great, but it is not unconventional enough for me in the 21st century to to carry the whole play. (

I listened to this full cast audiobook by streaming from the LATW website. What a funny play! And I loved the ending... I'll have to keep my eye open to see if I can catch a performance sometime. (

Constance Middleton is certainly not a desperate housewife. Her husband is having an affair, everyone knows it, but she remains cool and oblivious and doesn’t even want to know what’s going on. Yet she has a secret to share that will create a scandal.

This play is a witty and sharp comedy of manners - a battle of the sexes with a very calm and unromantic view of marriage. OK, it is witty, but there was a little too much cynicism for my taste.

I will try to listen to some other play by Somerset Maughan. He’s very good writing witty dialogue. Another great performance by L. A. Theatre Works with live audience. (

Ahhh me. There really is nothing like a good dose of intelligence and sheer wit. Especially concerning a well-crafted revenge served cold. Simply delicious. Constance is the model of all that I admire in a woman; manipulating her vulnerable position in society to its fullest free state, not to mention keeping every inch of her dignity the entire way through. John was finished from the beginning, and only knows at the very end just how deeply he's trapped in the web he himself began. And Marie-Louise. Ha. The poor thing, how empty her life must be without this sort of intellectual entertainment. So nice of a read. So nice. (
