Schitterende, bijzonder aangrijpende autobiografische roman over het verblijf van de prille twintiger Emanuel in een kuuroord in het toen populaire Berck-sur-Mer ('de stad der verdoemden'), waar terminale patiënten die lijden aan bottuberculose in een gipsen corset dat hun immobiliseert en volledig afhankelijk maakt, op hun genezing wachten. Echo's vanaf de Toverberg weerklinken, maar ook Franz Kafka, Robert Walser en Bruno Schulz zijn nooit ver weg en leken wel te hebben meegeschreven. Dromen, vriendschap, liefde, angst voor de dood, de wil om de levenskelk tot op de bodem leeg te drinken: Blecher kan het allemaal aan en maakt er één groots tafereel van dat schittert door eenvoud en emotionele authenticiteit.
'De zieken liggen languit in hun karretjes en bedden, verloren in dagdromen, verzonken in eindeloze lectuur of onthecht in de oneindige contemplatie van de onmetelijkheid van de oceaan.', zo schrijft Blecher in een bijgevoegde reportage die een Roemeense krant in 1934 publiceerde. Alweer een geweldige vertaling van Jan H. Mysjkin die eerder al Blechers even fantastische 'Avonturen in de alledaagse onwerkelijkheid' vertaalde.
P.S. op het laatste filmfestival in Gent zag ik de prachtige verfilming van het boek door de talentvolle regisseur Radu Jude: 'Scarred hearts'. Aanrader, samen met 'Aferim' van diezelfde Jude (ook erg krachtig, Gouden Beer in Berlijn, 2015). ( )
