In 2007, Lucille Clifton became the first African American woman to win the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, one of the most prestigious American poetry awards and one of the largest literary honors for work in the English language. I've enjoyed every Lucille Clifton book I've picked up so far. This one has some great poems about Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima and the boy on the Cream of Wheat box, as well as a set of meditations on the zen Ox paintings (or the names of the paintings, she hadn't seen the actually art when she wrote the poems). ( )
